  1. Thanks, Steve for the reply. I was just wondering if there was any significance to it like .cfg and .config are configuration files. I was thinking that perhaps sndconfig.real meant that it was the _real_ sndconfig not just the script that called it. I think I had too much free time today :-) mikey_111
  2. I was wondering why there is a .real like... /usr/sbin/sndconfig.real /usr/sbin/sndconfig and a few others. What is the .real extension? Thanks, mikey_111
  3. Ok, I have got a little farther. The same email does not cause a problem when viewed with Konqueror or with Firefox 1.0.1 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050223 Firefox/1.0.1) The issue is only with Mozilla (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040616) So probably Mozilla bug of this particular version. End of story. mikey_111
  4. Thanks devries, I will look around somemore check for bug reports. Not a big thing to me, but like a say first time it happened to me. Thought might be something executing when I viewed the email. Will give something to learn about :-) mikey_111
  5. Hello, Not sure if this is the right place to post this or not, but anyways. I am curious about something that happened the other day. I sometimes recieve emails I believe meant for windows box's. Sometimes I'll view the email source to look at it and maybe learn something (yea... I know will get me in trouble some day, if not already). So I viewed it and X died "caught signal 11" in log file. Never happened before did not think it would affect my Linux box (famous last words). I did a search and actually found the same if not very similar email posted to a source forge developer list and when I scrolled down through it and back up, it killed X again. I was wondering what was causing the issue? something in the html or ? Or could it be something in my browser email client that is causing this. I will post a link to the sourceforge forum where its at if someone would be willing to explain this to me. MDK 10.0 Xorg Mozilla 1.7 mikey_111
  6. Heres Richard Gooch's FAQ http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/rgooch/lin...docs/devfs.html I can't seem to find the man pages online, but I'm using mdk10.0 and man pages for the below commands are on the distribution. "man devfsd" DEVFSD(8) "man devfsd.conf" devfsd.conf(5) Thanks bvc for having a look at this. mikey_111
  7. Hello, I've been attempting to edit the /etc/devfsd.conf file so that on the "df" command output I have the easier read names like: /dev/hda5 rather than: /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part5 I've read R. Goochs howto on devfs, and man devfsd. But being a newb Its not sinking in. I tried commenting and uncommenting things in the file then restarting devfsd but "df" output does not change. Anybody messed with this? mikey_111
  8. Well think I (maybe) on to something. Was looking at my /etc/X11/Xsession file and found a reference to a /etc/X11/xinit/fixkeyboard which checks to see if keyboard matchs to one on remote system if not fixs it for remote sessions. I have a remote box with different keyboard that I log into, perhaps this is it? Going to look further. mikey_111
  9. I commented out the #Option "XkbRules" "xfree86.lst" still same warnings. Seems like everything works ok just, I did not have those warnings in mdk9.1 (same hardware). mikey_111
  10. Thanks mdg, I'll give that a try. mikey_111
  11. I have these errors in my kdm.log which I see if I hit Ctrl+F1 and I tried a few keyboard combos but can't seem to make the erros go away. Heres a snip from my log. lilo

Hi, I would like lilo to do something and I'm not sure it can, and most certainly I don't know how to make it do it. I've tried searching and I've made a decient attempt at reading the lilo user documentation under /usr/share/doc but I'm still lost. I have 2 ide hardrives and on the first 1 (hda) I have windows and mdk9.2 hda1=windows hda5= / hda6= swap hda7= /boot hda8= /var hda9= /usr hda10= /home hda11= /opt and on the 2 (hdb) I have mdk9.1 hdb1= / hdb5= swap hdb6= /home What I would like to do is to be able to boot to hdb and use mdk9.1 as an option in my lilo menu. The only way I was able to do this was someone showed me how to make directory under /mnt and mount /dev/hdb there and then edit the lilo.conf to point to the mount location and run lilo. But when I updated my kernels on the 9.2 and 9.1 I messed up my lilo.conf. Is there a better way? Possibly is grub the way to go? Advice appreciated :-) mikey_111
  14. Well I got past that issue and found my self in a bunch more. So I'm going to reconfigure my approach and hit the doc's. mikey_111
  15. Hello, I'm getting an error from wine when I try to run halflife [mike@avatar Half-Life]$ wine -- hl.exe -console Could not stat /home/mike/.wine/%HOME% (No such file or directory), ignoring drive Y: /usr/bin/wine: line 169: 19631 Segmentation fault artsdsp -s ${true_binary} $opts $dash "$exe" "$allargs" Wine version is 20030813-1mdk on a 9.2 install I looked at the /usr/bin/wine script and it says # Run wine through esd or arts. I'm not using # soundwrapper because wine only works through arts when using single threaded m ode. if [ `/sbin/pidof -s artsd` ] ; then artsdsp -s ${true_binary} $opts $dash "$exe" "$allargs" else if [ `/sbin/pidof -s esd` ]; then esddsp ${true_binary} $opts $dash "$exe" "$allargs" else ${true_binary} $opts $dash "$exe" "$allargs" fi fi If i run "/sbin/pidof -s" I get a pid # That pid comes up under top as artsd I should say I am using a windows partition not a fake drive. Any suggestions what I can do to get halflife working? mikey_111

    sound

The main chip set is sis735 and sound is sis7012 Yes I have sound blaster but it is isa and my board has no isa slots. I would have liked to have got it run correctly but a friend said it wasn't worth the trouble. I'm going to try a (cheap, again!) :-) pci card I have, cmedia I beleve it worked in MDK in another pc before. Priced a new pci SB 4.1 was $35.00 maybe if this wont work I'll break down and get it. Thanks, mikey_111

    sound

    Hello, I have a k7s5a mb with on board lan and sound. Lan has always worked good but sound gives me troubles. It plays for a little while then static noise is all I get using XMMS. also on start up of kde makes static noise then a little music. Kinda un predictable when it works and not. this is a dual boot works fine under windows. Below is some info. [mike@avatar mike]$ lspcidrake -v | grep AUDIO snd-intel8x0 : Silicon Integrated Systems [siS]|SiS7012 PCI Audio Accelerator [MULTIMEDIA_AUDIO] (vendor:1039 device:7012 subv:1019 subd:0a14) [mike@avatar mike]$ grep sound-slot /etc/modules.conf alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 [mike@avatar mike]$ /sbin/chkconfig --list sound sound 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off [mike@avatar mike]$ /sbin/chkconfig --list alsa alsa 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off [mike@avatar mike]$ [mike@avatar mike]$ /sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp [mike@avatar mike]$ [mike@avatar mike]$ cat /etc/modules.conf alias autofs autofs4 probeall usb-interface usb-ohci alias eth0 sis900 probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia # ALSA portion alias char-major-116 snd alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 # module options should go here # OSS/Free portion alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss # card #1 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss [mike@avatar mike]$ Any ideas on what to do or where to look?Short of buying a real soundcard :-) MDK 9.2 kernel 2.4.22-21mdk mikey_111
  18. Success! :D I think anyways. Thanks for the lead Steve, was checking out Pam when I saw your post and thought about checking out what Webmin could do. So went under System-->Pam authentication-->userdrake deleted userdrake and created a new one. It works properly now. As user lets me look at things and root password lets me change things. Going to have to read more of the documentation on Linux-PAM make sure its locked up right. Thanks kmack and Steve for the help mikey_111
  19. I've looked at some log files sys,auth,... and the common thing I could find was userdrake(pam_unix) auth could not identify password for [root] I'm going to check out texstar's site as you suggested and see what I can find if nothing there I might start exploring pam (new territory for me:-) Thanks, mikey_111
  20. Hi kmack, No I do K-->configuration-->other-->userdrake or from xterm or eterm I type "userdrake" also if I become super user and type "userdrake" it gives me this error The password you typed is invalid. Please try again. Same here, I just checked it, I think I paniced kde 3.1.4 texstar No I did not save password. If I start userdrake and just click the OK button with out typing a password it keeps asking for a password. mikey_111
  21. Yes made sure correct password and no caplocks. The thing that throws me is userdrake opens and works fine when I click on unprivileged button? Which seems like a pretty big security hole for me anyways :(
  22. Hello, I just tried to use userdrake from the kde configuration menu and it asked for root password I typed it in correctly and it gave me this message. The password you typed is invalid. Please try again. I tried typing in password and hitting enter also, clicking the OK button. Also tried starting from eterm window as superuser still same result invalid password. A little follow-up, if bring up userdrake and it ask's for password I click on unprivileged button userdrake opens and there I am. 8-| Not a good thing right? Where would I look to correct this. Mcc and Hardrake seem to work correctly. MDK 9.1 Athlon single updates installed mikey_111
  23. This is kinda the same subject. I have quake2 and expansion pack for linux. I can run the game in softx in xwindow and soft in console ok (but s-l-o-w). I dont seem to understand how to get gl or glx working. when I set vid to gl or glx it gives me an error like no such file. In my quake directory I have this: ref_gl.so* ref_glx.so* are the ref_gl.so and ref_glx.so supposed to point to something? The readme seems to only deal with 3dfx cards I have an nvidia geforce4 mx420 with the latest driver from nvidia. I can say I tried lokis tribes2 and it works great on my machine. If linking up libraries is what I need to do what and how? appreciate any help mikey_111 found it. renamed ref_gl.so* to ref_gl.so.bak and ran quake2 +set vid_ref glx +set gl_driver libGL.so and it started working :-) mikey_111
  24. Thanks all, sounds like a plan I'll just download to my drive. I tried removing all my sources and a different ftp source and still got weirdness :-| mikey_111
  25. I seem to have strange behavior in my mandrake update I have double entries for the same software, when I run update with one of the listed servers. the files look the same except one is bigger than the other. and if I select them to install it says everything allready installed. I reloaded the list and they still show up. Any Idea? mikey_111 forgot, useing MDK 8.2
