Guest bhrich902
as a router/firewall, i know i need 2 nics, one from the internet and the other to a switch to connect the others in the LAN, but, what if, since 3 machines are the ones in the LAN, i just put in three nics in the server box and connect each machine to them. would that work the same way as supposed to having to buy a switch? thx... fuzzylizard
In theory yes. However, if you do do this, make sure you get cross-over cables instead of the regular straight twisted pair cables. Otherwise, your computers won't be able to talk to each other. The one problems you may encounter is that any internet sharing/routing/dhcp software you may use will probably be setup to work across a single nic card -- as opposed to 2 or 3 of them. So you may need to configure some stuff yourself. The switch is definitely the better way to go. Switches are not that expensive and what happens when you get that 5th or 6th computer?
