phpMyAdmin

Trying to get phpMyAdmin up and running. MySQL is running. When I hit http://localhost/admin/phpMyAdmin/index.php the message 'cannot load MySQL extension' is displayed. The phpMyAdmin documentation says it's likely that mysql.so needs to be installed but the file is there under /usr/lib/php/extensions/.

Are there any logs that might point to the source of the problem?

Any other options to be tried?

Thanks for the help.
