I'm considering a US Robitics 56K USB External Faxmodem. The mfc pt # is USR5633A. Can anyone tell me if Mandrake 9.1 supports this modem ?

I'm very new to Linux, so be nice. :?:

I use a US robotics external fax/modem with no problems. Just use the internet connection wizard, go through those steps and your on. As long as you IP is linux friendly that is. Then use KPPP as your dialer (Its in the ineternet menu). I have to say I was very happy at how easy it is to connetc to the web in both Mandrake 9.1 and Redhat 9.0.

I'd stay away from any usb modem; your likely to have trouble configuring that in linux if your able to do it at all. For linux your best bet is an external modem that connects to your serial port. Almost all internal pci modems are "winmodems" or "software modems" and they generally are some trouble in linux. External serial port modems are almost all "hardware modems", i.e. the hardware in the modem does all the processing unlike winmodems where the software driver and the cpu do all the work. Hardware modems generally work better, faster and more reliably in both windows and linux.

grendal, I'll bet you have an external SERIAL port modem rather than an external usb modem don't you. And your right the external serial port modems from USRobotics do work great because they are hardware modems. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the poster inquired about the external usb modem and those are a pain to get going in linux. I almost missed the usb thing myself
