Hi,

I'm trying to install Mandrake on a box of one of my friends.

Tried first with 9.1

just after boot, black screen after the "press enter"

So i tried F1 to boot with the text option. It goes a little than freeze

I tried a knoppix (version from last chrismas), and same problem black screen after the "knoppix lang=fr"

I tried a W2k install, and everything worked !

So this was not a big hardware problem..

I Re-tried with a 9.1, this time i used the other kernel (2.2 instead of 2.4).

It worked and installation went fine.

But if i boot on the HD, just afer lilo again the black screen...

Today i tried 9.2 rc2

Same behaviour

While trying the text option, it crashes at about the same time as with 9.1, but this time i've got an error message of the kernel wich loops at the screen where there is the world "APIC"

I have search about that and it seems to be related to SMP, but this is a classical motherboard with via kt400 and one athlon 2800+

Please help !

Hi,

The problem is that i don't have access to lilo.conf

I tried to write to lilo:

failsafe noacpi noapic

but still doesn't work.

i tried to activate !!! the apic support in the bios but failed too

i tried the last knoppix but same problem

I tried to put a free bsd on it and it worked !

Seems like this computer doesn't like linux 2.4'

:-(((((((((((((((

At install.....F1>linux noapic

or

expert noapic

I have an Abit KD7 MoBo with the KT400 and a Athlon 1900+ and have to boot ML9.1 with

noapic acpi=off

All other distros are fine, including morphix. So, it's the mdk 2.4 not all 2.4's, for me anyway. I also get messages about smp and I don't have a smp capable MoBo. I d/k why the kernel comes up with that.

BTW, if I install with noapic it's very slow. I can install without it but need noapic acpi=off for it to work after install :?

If you installed already then you need to edit lilo. if not do the install like bcv says.

If you can't access lilo you need to boot up in rescue (use install CD then F1)

You need to let it mount you partitions under /mnt

then do a chroot /mnt (means you don't need to pass arguaments to lilo as to where lilo.conf is) and then vi /etc/lilo.conf

Make sure you add the append stuff and then esc :wq! and remember to run lilo (type lilo)

It should update the mbr and add the options to pass top the kernel (which is what append actualy does).

Good luck
