My 9.1 system will take much longer to boot when the ADSL modem has had a hiccup... and a few related questions. I get X session errors and local host errors

...

Here is the sys log (part)

This is not a problem if the modem is connected?

My localhost is called Athlon.Stratford... is this the problem... & just what should you set localhost to when on a small local LAN...?

512k ADSLmodem---switch---IPCOP box----ML9.1 box and Win XP box ( for the significant other! )

Do you have it set right in /etc/hosts? It should look like:

127.0.0.1 Athlon.Stratford

This seems to be where most of the time is taken up:

Sep 10 10:17:20 Athlon rc: Disabling Boot logo succeeded

Sep 10 10:20:24 Athlon xinetd[1953]: warning: can't get client address: Transport endpoint is not connected

this can be normal when you have the network starting at startup and there is no connection there. an easy way to get around this is to get a cable/dsl router so that you always get an IP even if the DSL connection is down.

if linux can't get an IP, it will wait VERY long to try to get a response. i hated this w/my laptop....so i started loading ethernet on my own.

Tyme,

I understand what you are saying!

I could understand my problem if the modem was acting as a router , however ( it isnt ) , the IPCop box alocates DHCP for the network , so the ADSL conection only hangs off that ( So to speak ? )

SS

etc/hosts shows    127.0.0.1   localhost

should I change it? I set Athlon.Stratford during initial set up...

& again wot should you call your localhost on a small LAN which is not on a domain?

Yes, you should change it to:

127.0.0.1 Athlon.Stratford Athlon

You can call your local network hostname anything you want. It helps if you make it look like a qualified domain name. Example:

My box's hostname is:

omar.serenity

and the client box is

laluna.serenity

In /etc/hosts, I have:

127.0.0.1 omar.serenity omar

192.168.0.1 omar.serenity omar

192.168.0.2 laluna.serenity laluna

Make sense?
