jlc
I replied. Gentoo can be frustrating. It's kind of SICK fun!
bvc
First, forget kde. It has nothing to do with having a functional 'linux'. What is the result of ls /usr ls /var If /usr shows something, then what is the result of ls /usr/bin Same with the others. Also, any special reason for all these separate partitions, other than following instructions? If you're a simple desktop, keep it simple  / /home is all you need. Having a /boot will screw you as well, though many will disagree. No, I won't explain 'why' either  :)

But why? j/k  I do agree on the extra slice's though. Unless it is a REAL server, I wouldn't break it down that much. Either /boot, / & swap or /boot, /, swap & /home That's it for me.
