grendal
Ok, Im still very new with Mandrake (since June) but I was thinking of trying out either debian or Knoppix. I have Knoppix live cd and Have used it just to show friends what linux really looks like, but haven't installed anything, since it runs on the cd. Which distro is easier?? Ill probally keep mandrake also but just want a feel of whats out there.
tyme
knoppix is much easier. debian can be quite the headache. you could also try out libranet-for the newest version it costs, for the previous version i think you can get it free. I believe he's using MDK, since is original post states it! Yes, like tyme states knoppix will be easier to install then Debain and yes, Libranet 2.7 is free to download which is also easier to install. I'm not sure by your post, but you can install knoppix on your hd. http://www.freenet.org.nz/misc/knoppix-install.html

phunni
Ive only used knoppix a a live cd on my friends pcs to show them Linux. I like Mandrake but to improve my linux skills I was just thinking of trying another distro. If you want to improve your linux skills, then I would suggest sticking with mandrake for a little while until you're more comfortable with it - know your way around a bit and have maybe compiled a kernel or two, and then go for a distro like Debian or gentoo or the like. It'd be a good idea to cut your teeth on Mandrake while you get familiar with the basics. As soon as you feel really comfortable with it - then challenge yourself on a new distro
iphitus
You want to improve your Linux skills?? I did an Linux From Scratch a few months after I started with Linux. I learnt $#!Tloads YOu learn how to compile things and how to configure things and how it works. It is probably the best way In my view to learn, you learn the nuts and bolts. It isn't that hard either. And also, try to use the command line as much as possible, i'm becomin an addict, there is always a term open on my computer. Before you say make or extract a zip or tar.gz in GUI, try to do it at commandline. Be curious! look at things on your system!! Don't hide it!! And always use 'man command' and 'command --help' And as i read somewhere Anything that can be done in GUI can be done twice as fast in command line Too true!!!!! Don't be scared!! DO an LFS www.linuxfromscratch.org And there is some good stuff in the old docs section of this site including a very good shell tutorial. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/docs/basics/i.../index.html#uts Good Luck.
