I bet everyone is sick of seeing these threads....

I have the old blue stingray modem - and I can't get it to work with Mandrake 9.1. I'm a total newbie when it comes to Linux...I've basically installed it to give me something to do! I'd rather mess about with it with access to the internet though! So, here's my problem:

I tried using the wizard, but to no avail. I followed the isntructions in http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=2060 to the letter....

Firstly, I found PPPOA3 in /usr/sbin - which is a bit different from what it says in the instructions, but I figured that's ok....

When I type the modem_run line, one green light blinks on the modem for a while. When the prompt comes back up, the modem flashes green a couple more times, then flickers red, then both lights come on green. No messages are displayed at the pppd command....

ifconfig gave me the following:

eth0 Link Encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:44:6C:80:B5

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

RX packets: 0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets: 0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 Carrier:0

collisions:0 txqueuelen:100

RX bytes:0 (0.0b) TX bytes: 0 (0.0b)

Interrupt: 5 Base Address: 0xef00

lo Link encap: local Loopback

inet addr 127.0.0.1 Mask: 255.0.0.0

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU: 16436 Metric: 1

RX packets: 156 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

TX packets: 156 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 Carrier:0

collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

RX bytes: 10568 (10.3Kb) TX bytes 10568 (10.3Kb)

If I try to access anything in the browser - it says

"An error occured while loading http://www.whatever.com

Unknown host www.whatever.com"

And the numbers in bold in the quote change.

I think it's trying to sue my Ethernet card for some reason. Shouldn't it say 'ppp0' or something where it says 'eth0'? There is nothing connected to my ethernet card at the moment.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, the fact that the light sequence happens the way it does is a good sign. You say you followed the instructions in the topic to the letter, but I want to clarify. Have you tried using <<your real username>> as your username and also, if that doesn't work <<your real username>>@<<your isp>>? Also, did you change that line in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl to:

pty "/usr/bin/pppoa3 -m 1 -c -vpi 8 -vci 35"

? Of course using the proper vpi and vci numbers for your locale.

Next time, open an extra console window and, as root, type

tail -v -f /var/log/messages

and go back to the other consolel window and type your

pppd call adsl

and watch the other window for error messages in /var/log/messages

I'm thinking you might be on to something with the eth0....but I'm not sure. I've heard that harddrake messes things up with the modem, so try turning harddrake off in Mandrake Control Center > System > DrakXServices (note: you may have to stop harddrake and uncheck the box for 'On boot' and reboot, for you to lose the problem, but try first without rebooting).

Posting this from Linux :) :)

I managed to disable the eth0 thing - but it made no difference.

I disabled harddrake like you said and it worked! Thanks so much for your help :)

Notes for other BTOpenworld users:

vpi: 0 vci: 38 -- this is fairly easy to find on the net

username: The whole thing - including the @ sign

Do you have to put in the hg number as well?

I could never get my Alcatel Speedtouch to work with Mandrake 9.0 or Mandrake 9.1 until I found this site (I'd also tried the Mandrake GUI and Wizards to set this up but failed):

http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/

It has all of the instructions you need, but if I remember correctly all I had to do to make it work was to run the script supplied in the download package. It all just worked. There are a few more steps required to get it to startup when you boot your machine, but everything is explained.

I have not tried in on 9.2.
