I'm about to purchase a controller-based modem but I just wanna check a few things 1st..

Will mandrake automatically detect that it is a 56k modem and that it uses v.92 and v.44 compression? They give windows users a driver disk just checking that linux will be ok with it as the manufacturer doesn't provide any linux support. I've even heard that it has extra features which I know linux won't be able to do but will it still be able to connect?

Thanks.

Creative Modem Blaster v.92 PCI.

Heres a link to the creative site about it:

http://uk.europe.creative.com/estore/produ...ct.asp?prod=287

I even emailed creative on whether it would be a controller-based modem and this was their reply:

Dear Sir

There are two different versions of the Modem Blaster V.92 PCI, one

hardware and one software. More information about these is available

here:

Alternatively you can access the page as follows:

1. Go to http://ask.europe.creative.com.

2. Type in 13298 in "Enter your query below".

3. Tick the checkbox below to search for a "Solution ID".

4. Click "Go" (Please note hitting enter will not work).

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact

There isn't the actual model listed on Mandrake's hardware page. Theres 3 modems that are not compatible and 1 that is. Is it worth risking?!

The hardware lists are not complete. Any controller based modem will work, because it is, well, a real modem. The modems that use your cpu need a software emulator in order to be a modem. At one time, isa modems were controller based and pci were not. But that has changed. Your first thoughts are correct. Buy a controller based modem, your bios will recognize it, and so will linux.
