cdroms & manual.

two questions.

I have an aopen crw1232 cdrom rewriter and an atapi cdrom. Neither of these I can get working. Does anyone know if this is due to the hardware? Or it it just me.

second question, Is the Mandrake Manual worth buying? I am a total novice to this and I am getting fed up trying to work out what I should be doing trawling through the help screens. I can manage the office apps etc I am having problems getting to grips with the system itself.I prefer to browse before buying but this is not feasible with mandake manual. If I could order it at a bookshop I wpould do so in preference to buying it over the internet. Generic linux manuals seem to be little help.

I'm hooked but i need help with my habit.

As for your hardware, I see no reason why they can't work.

As for a manual, I agree with your sentiment about having an owners manual for what you have. The generic ones are only good up to a point because different distros can do things---well a little different!!

When you say the hardware isn't working, does that mean they're not found in your bios, or in linux, or they're in the bios and not linux, or they're seen in both places but not functioning??

They seem to be in both but not functioning. I can go in to mandrake control centre in root, change permissions and everything seems ok but I can't access them either in root or user. Either they are incompatable with linux or I am doing something silly. Given my status as a genuine newbie that is probably the most likely.

If I'm being honest don't know how to check that they are in the bios. They work ok in windows (I have it dual booted)

Maybe you could let us know what drives are hooked up to what ide ports and give us a listing of /etc/fstab.

Did you mount the CD after putting it in the drive?

Glitz.

When your computer boots up, try to have a look at the fisrt boot screen, where the bios is telling you how much ram, what processor, what is on what ide port , etc.

The first item listed is primary master, the second is primary slave, the third is secondery master, and the fourth is secondery slave.

Or hit f1 (maybe delete, depends on the board) and look at your first setup screen. Everything is listed there.
