Can't remember where I found this lot but running these commands will enable you to operate Wvdial as a normal user:

chmod +s /usr/bin/wvdial

chmod +x /usr/sbin/pppd

chmod +s /usr/sbin/pppd

chmod +s /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial

chmod 0755 /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial

I put this lot into a little script which will when I get round to it run automatically on bootup. I never turn off the computer so doing this has not seemed urgent.

Wvdial loads instantly as it does not have to utilise all the KDE stuff in order to work (as Ramfree 17 noted). I like a GUI (I use IceWM as window manager and Rox for the desktop) so I use Gtkdial as a useful frontend to wvdial. I can run it without recourse to a terminal and can also alter on the fly which ISP I dial. It also keeps track of session and total time online. The same people make a small program that enables you to easily add/subtract/edit ISPs, although the Gtkdial manual tells you clearly how to do it directly in the wvdial config file - which is very easy once you know the correct syntax.
