SoulSe
I found out about Freevo from this post: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=5533 But I wanted to start a seperate thread for it. Has anyone setup a Freevo box? I have an old AMD Athlon 500 which I am thinking of using for the job. I will use it with a 3DFX Voodoo 3000 for TV out and purchase a Linux compatible video capture card for recording, etc. Which one is best? I will probably use a wireless mouse or gamepad as a "remote" - the ir option seems expensive and complicated. Has anyone got any suggestions? Have any of you setup a Freevo box? Is it worth it? I am also concerned that the TV out on the 3DFX will not be good enough... dunno.
tyme
I also have plans to do this (obviously-said i did in that post) if you look here: http://freevo.sourceforge.net/install.html#Hardware it suggests Hauppage WinTV boards for the video capture. this one looks decent: http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?s...ck=searchViewed I don't see how the TV-out would not be good emough.... SoulSe
Well, the only way to find out is to try I guess. I remember having problems with screen size when using the 3DFX. This is going to be a cool mission though and I'm going to be the coolest kid on the block if I get it going. Are you going to buy the Hauppage tyme? tyme
possibly when i get paid at the end of the week. i also need to pick up a case for the system-so i'm not sure when i'll get around to putting it all together. and of course to make it as minimal as possible i'm going to be using gentoo for the box. oh crap.....i need a hard drive too! grr... as for the tv-out, i'm going to have to use the DXR3 i have sitting around unused. no extra video cards with a tv-out, unfortunately :-(
SoulSe
oh crap.....i need a hard drive too! grr... And not just any harddrive if you want to use it to record Alias!
tyme
lol.... i think i'll just build my current system to only use the 60 gig hard drive, then use the 20gig for this system....i think :-/
SoulSe
Yeah, I'm going to do the same with a 10gig I have in my box. I just hope I can find that capture card at a local retailer.
tyme
from what I understand they are pretty popular-so hopefully you'll be able to find it somewhere :)
mtweidmann
There is an alternative project called MythTv for which there are Mandrake built rpms. I played around with them for a while, and got fairly good results.
tyme
http://www.mythtv.org it's pretty nice also, unfortunately it doesn't say that it supports DXR3-FreeVO does however. Since I'm going to be using DXR3 this is important to me :)
SoulSe
They both actually look pretty good... hmm.... I guess I'll give both a try. Freevo seems to be more serious though. Now I need to pray that I can find SA tv listings in the required format :?
Michel
For the ones who didn't know yet..:). Oxine is also a frontend for set-top-boxes, anyway all multimedia. It uses the xine-libs...It's only version 0.2, but already worth to look at. Here is the page: http://oxine.sourceforge.net/ It supports DX3( antway everything xin supports). It's written in C. I don't use it, but also thought about building such a box....but what is DX3??? Although it maybe not look active, it is..just look at the archives....The latest posts relate also to freevo. SoulSe
I unfortunately doesn't support video capturing, but hopefully it will in teh future............That's one of the main things I want to do with the box. Freevo still looks great so far. Damnit! No South African XML TV listings :( Well, I guess I can still set record times and stuff?
tyme
but what is DX3??? DXR3-it's part of many DVD decoder cards, specifically the Sigma Designs Hollywood Plus card (and others). In these cases the best part about this card/chipset is that it has a video-out, in the case that your video card may not, this can be used.
