Guest suPERLman
Hi all! I'm using Mandrake 9.1 and I'm loving it! :) However, I'm having some problems to surf on the web. I can connect to ADSL just fine but the connection to my ISP is extremely unstable. Every time I have got to log in again in my ISP. Do you know how can I fix it? if you don't, do you know how can I make linux to keep checking the ISP connection? Because I have a script that connects automatically to the ISP... Thanks! suPERLman
Cannonfodder
Try going through Mandrake Control Center, click the Network icon, and use the wizard. But click the "expert" box. See what you see in there.. I don't have ADSL so take this with a grain of salt..
Guest suPERLman
I checked my configuration, but I think there is no problem there.... I don't know if this is related to the problem, but sometimes even the screen to log in on the ISP doesn't appear.
mtweidmann
Out of interest is it a problem with your connection or with your setup? I meand ADSL connections shouldn' be dropped like a modem connection can be. Ok its going happen sometimes, but its meant to be like a network connection, always on. Guest suPERLman
I don't know where is the problem, but I think my configurations are OK. I mean, I can connect and surf, but sometimes it gets extremely slow, I think it has some problems to connect with the servers. Sometimes it just stops connecting to servers at all! If I wait a while, it starts to connect to servers again, but mainly I have got to reconnect to my ISP. With Windows, my connection is working just fine. bvc
do you know how can I make linux to keep checking the ISP connection? Because I have a script that connects automatically to the ISP...See man pppd (I think this is what you're looking for) lcp-echo-failure n If this option is given, pppd will presume the peer to be dead if n LCP echo-requests are sent without receiving a valid LCP echo-reply. If this happens, pppd will terminate the connec- tion. Use of this option requires a non-zero value for the lcp- echo-interval parameter. This option can be used to enable pppd to terminate after the physical connection has been broken (e.g., the modem has hung up) in situations where no hardware modem control lines are available. lcp-echo-interval n If this option is given, pppd will send an LCP echo-request frame to the peer every n seconds. Normally the peer should respond to the echo-request by sending an echo-reply. This option can be used with the lcp-echo-failure option to detect that the peer is no longer connected. lcp-max-configure n Set the maximum number of LCP configure-request transmissions to n (default 10). lcp-max-failure n Set the maximum number of LCP configure-NAKs returned before starting to send configure-Rejects instead to n (default 10). lcp-max-terminate n Set the maximum number of LCP terminate-request transmissions to n (default 3). lcp-restart n Set the LCP restart interval (retransmission timeout) to n sec- onds (default 3). Michel
I'v got reactions that shorewall (and it indeeds does apply some changes) speeds up your internetconnection(it's a firewall..., but it comes down to the ip-tables in linux...). I've also adsl and I'm surfing at maximum tp my knowledge... You can try my files(I uses adsl..so normally not a problem....). You can find them on lumumba.luc.ac.be/~michel.. it's not a guarantee it will work, but you can try... the files have to be placed(overwritten) in /etc/shorewall, but first make a backup of the present ones in case it dioesn't work or make it worse! Just copy them temporary to your root-account or something. Son't forget to type (as root). shorewall restart after you installe dthem..)
