Sunwatcher
I've just installed Mandriva Powerpack on my laptop. I installed Amarok, but the app fails to start. I get the splash screen, and my hd drive light flashes, but then nothing. If I click on the splash screen, it disappears but the hd light continues to flash randomly, and I can't shut down or reboot the machine. I have tried removing and reinstalling, but no go. (I run Amarok under Gnome.) Any thoughts?
daniewicz
Try running Amarok from the command line. This will allow you to see error messages.
Sunwatcher
Try running Amarok from the command line. This will allow you to see error messages. Well, that was simple! I did as you suggested (I'm too much of a novice to think of it yet), and saw the problem. I had to change the permissions on a couple of directories that Amarok was trying to access. I did have to reinstall again, but now all is fine. Many thanks daniewicz!

RadioEar
Starting programs in konsole I find to be the handiest piece of advice one can use to trouble shoot in KDE as well.
