Guest solanjie
I am using a Mandrake 9.1, cablemodem via a linksys router, and a Realtek nic. My isp forwards the ip to my router via dhcp which in turn forwards me my ip via dhcp. In previous releases of Mandrake, other distros and Windows, this setup is easy to accomplish. Just choose dhcp and everything works. In 9.1, however, I have not been able to connect after trying for 2 days. I've used both the wizard and expert mode. Praying that somebody can help me get connected.

Ok, just to make things clear, you have this setup: ISP----(dhcp)----Router----(dhcp)----YourComputerRunningMDK9.1 Can you post the output of ifconfig when you type that as root plz? If you only see the local loop (whatever, the lo thing), try that as root: dhcpcd eth0 And then check that you obtained an IP from your router with the ifconfig command. That should work. Guest solanjie
On boot and after running the wizard, I get: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:CC:23:45:13 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:0 (0.0 MiB) TX bytes:0 (0.0 KiB) Interrupt:16 Base address:0x6000 eth0:9 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:CC:23:45:13 inet addr:169.254.180.71 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 Base address:0x6000 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:666 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:666 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:41568 (40.5 KiB) TX bytes:41568 (40.5 KiB) Which shows you dhcp isn't working. If I choose expert and fill in: ip address:192.168.1.100 netmask:255.255.255.0 boot protocol:static startedonboot:yes dhcp client: (blank) and gateway:192.168.1.113 (in the internet settings box) I get: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:A0:CC:23:45:13 inet addr:192.168.1.100 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:0 (0.0 MiB) TX bytes:0 (0.0 KiB) Interrupt:16 Base address:0x6000 lo (same as lo above) BUT, I cannot ping the router. If I boot windows, I can reach the interent; so hardware hasn't gone bad. I also have 3 other linux machines connected to ethernet ports to this router... all are working (typing from one)... and 3 wireless windows machines that work as well. Any idea what I am doing wrong or what I need to do to get the machine working would be greatly appreciated.
Guest solanjie
Also, to answer your setup question... yes. My router receives my ip from the isp... then it gives me a local ip via dhcp 192.168.1.100 (.100-.199)
Guest solanjie
fixed it.... editing /etc/lilo.conf noapic didn't get it, but a reinstall and running "linux noapic" did. Thanks!
