acpi

Hey,

I tried to enable acpi today. But it doesn't work..ok, when I start up, the syslog mentions:

ACPI Vendor "VIA694" System "AWRDACPI" Revision 0x0 has a known ACPI BIOS problem

Bogus Table: unrevoverable error

Can this explain why I don't have /rpc/acpi...I thought that the latest kernels were acpi(also by Mandrake) were already acpi-enabled..How does it come I don't have it in my /proc-filesystem????For now, I disabled acpi and wil use apm further. But any ideas?

thanks.

I did it with mcc...

I even ran the command "lilo" manually(although Mandrake does that already)....

When it is started up, the service is stopped..If I try to start it up:

service acpid start...

it says that there isn't an entry: /proc/acpi/.... (and that isn't there) andsays that maybe my kernel has no acpi-patch...

  • 3 weeks later...

same problem here.

Both acpi and acpid installed, DrakServices always shows them as stopper even if they are active at boot.

IF i try to start acpid manualli i get this error message (the same appears during the boot):

acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event : no such file or directory

Hi guys

Are you guys sure APM (Advanced Power Management) is disabled either in the BIOS & MCC>System>DrakXServices? Because on any system, the first that is loaded (APM or ACPI) wins. The other is not loaded. That may be why you don't have /proc/acpi. Do you have /proc/apm ?

MottS you were right, i disabled APM, forced ACPI in GRUB and it seems to work.

At least I have ACPI running without errors.

Klaptop now says that i have a partial ACPI installation, I need to abilitate "AC Adaptor" and "control method battery" and recompile the kernel.

this scaries me a bit.

Any help?

thanks.

I need to abilitate "AC Adaptor" and "control method battery" and recompile the kernel.

Are you sure those options are not build into the kernel or as modules for Mandrake?

We have a nice FAQ here about recompiling kernels. Here it is:

http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=4595

At the 'make menuconfig' step, look at GeneralSetup-->ACPI Support

here is a part of what i get with a lsmod:

button                  3724   0  (unused)

thermal                 8224   0  (unused)

processor              10872   0  [thermal]

fan                     2528   0  (unused)

ac                      2784   0  (unused)

battery

Recompiling the kernel scaries me a bit at the moment.

Yes they are modules.

In my case, I have a desktop with have _ _ _ acpi :P . The mods were loaded but not used because of the cheap OEM crap.

Do you have a LapTop? Should it be using APM or ACPI? If a cheap OEM desktop....this is normal.

As MottS said...whichever the kernel finds first is what it'll use. If you should be using acpi, does /etc/lilo.conf have

acpi=on

in the append section?

Yes, I have a HP Omnibook XE3 GF

I disabled APM, now ACPI starts with no error messages.

I configured GRUB so that it loads ACPI.

What should I do, insmod ac.o.gz and insmod battery.o.gz ??

I already answered myself: no ;)

:mystilol:

bvc, you are right. I also have a cheap OEM desktop computer and ACPI doesn't work properly even if I disable APM, enable ACPI and run acpid. That might be a different story for a laptop though... but I don't have one so I can't help anymore on that :(
