System freezes on pcmcia-card removal [solved]

When I remove the pcmcia-card of either the zip-drive or the external HDD (with EACH drive idle), the system completely freezes, requiring a reboot (at least, I haven't discovered any other way of waking it up :unsure: ). On the assumtion that it IS possible to hot-swap pcmcia devices, I appear to be doing something wrong; perhaps you have to warn the system somehow that a card is about to be removed? I'm using mva2006/kde on a Tosh Sat 4600 Pro. Has anyone any ideas? Thanks.

You *may* have to alter the I/O ports used by pcmcia, or touch a little your udev rules.

Starting from the first one, and since I don't have a Mandriva handy right now: Do you have a file /etc/pcmcia/config ? If yes, copypaste it here.

Are your devices listed in that file?

More importantly, do you have the pcmciautils package installed? It contains the hotplug scripts and initialization tools for the pcmcia devices.

The HDD-card is included (the entry is "PCMCIA", "PnPIDE"), but, since I can't find any mention of Zip or iomega, I assume that the zip-card is not. Perhaps that's the problem. :unsure:

The following package is installed: "pcmcia-cs-3.2.8-8mdk"; is that the pcmciautils package that you meant?

Do an "urpmi pcmciautils" and see what happens.

pcmcia-cs is used by the (embedded?) card reader.

Did you answer 'y'? You need these hotplug scripts for your switching of pcmcia cards.

I did "urpmi pcmciautils", then removed the hdd-card and the system didn't freeze (progress??). However, when I re-inserted it and tried to mount in KDiskFree (because the system did NOT auto-mount it), the response was

Called: mount /dev/hde1
mount: only root can mount /dev/hde1 on /mnt/pcmciafat

and when I tried to mount it as root I got

[root@localhost ~]# mount /dev/hde1 /mnt/pcmciafat
mount: special device /dev/hde1 does not exist

It looks as though the I/O ports and/or the udev rules DO need tweeking, as you suggested, scarecrow?

Please see

man pccardctl

In your case I would suggest trying (as root)

pccardctl ident

this should give you the socket #. I will use an 0 to show you the commands, you will need to replace the 0 with your socket #, if it's different. As root do

pccardctl suspend 0

then

pccardctl eject 0

now you should be able to switch your card, and do

pccardctl insert 0

then

pccardctl resume 0

if necessary.

Thanks, coverup, but because of the following results, I assume that I have to do something extra:

No manual entry for pccardctl
[lawrence@localhost ~]$ pccardctl
bash: pccardctl: command not found

and

[root@localhost ~]# man pccardctl
No manual entry for pccardctl
[root@localhost ~]# pccardctl
-bash: pccardctl: command not found
[root@localhost ~]# urpmi pccardctl
no package named pccardctl

I've found the man pccardctl on "http://linux-command.5w.cz/manual/pccardctl", but I'm still stumped since I don't appear to have the actual command. Any more tips? Thanks.

That's strange. The pcmciautils package has it included in Mandriva 2008. Can you give me a link to the package you installed?

Maybe its not in the Mandriva 2006 package? :huh:
