zibi1981
So new AMD/ATI Catalyst driver have been released, and again I cannot install it properly on 2008.0  It has to be something wrong with Mandriva itself, as on 2007.0/2007.1 I didn't have such problem. Now I even cannot build packages for my system, because I get this message [root@localhost ATI]# ./ati-driver-installer-7-11-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Mandriva/2008 Created directory fglrx-install.GN7673 Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing ATI Proprietary Linux Driver-8.433........................................................................... ................................................................................ . ================================================== ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager ================================================== Generating package: Mandriva/2008 Package build failed! Package build utility output: error: file /root/tmp/ati.cQ7758/SOURCES/ati-driver-installer-8.433-x86.x86_64.run missing: No such file or directory Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.GN7673 I see this every time when trying to build rpms not only using the newest driver package, but also previous too. Other people report to have similar issues. When I tried to install it "normally", that is using the script provided with the drivers and not building packages, firstly all seemed to be well. After the installation I ran aticonfig --initial to configure the driver, and then restarted. After reboot my monitor resolution was changed to 1600x1200 (normally I'm working on 1024x768), and the refresh rate was reduced to 60 Hz, which my eyes cannot stand for long (I have a CRT). I was able to change resolution, but not refresh rate, to desired level, but it all lasted till next restart... Of course getting direct rendering on wasn't an option. Below I attached my Xorg.0.log and Xorg.9.log for those who are patient enough to see what was in them (now I'm back to previous driver from Mandriva's DVD). Please don't write things like "install drivers from repos", because I need the newest version to play ET:QW on a decent settings, and the old version isn't an option for me. anyone
Could you post your /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log file here? It can tell a lot about what's wrong.
zibi1981
Hello and thanks for your interest in my problem. When installing this driver I did as written below [root@localhost ATI]# ./ati-driver-installer-7-11-x86.x86_64.run Created directory fglrx-install.Wp7073 Verifying archive integrity... All good. Uncompressing ATI Proprietary Linux Driver-8.433................. ================================================== ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager ================================================== Detected configuration: Architecture: i686 (32-bit) X Server: X.Org 7.1 and later releases Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.Wp7073 [root@localhost ATI]# aticonfig --initial Uninitialised file found, configuring. anyone
Yup: I had the exactly same problem. Try removing the kernel-source package and installing kernel-desktop-devel package, or reinstalling it if already exists. That's what I did and finally got it working that way. zibi1981
I did as You suggested and installed kernel-desktop-devel package, so now my system has [zibi1981@localhost ~]$ rpm -qa | grep kernel kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0 kernel-desktop-2.6.22.9-1mdv-1-1mdv2008.0 kernel-desktop-latest-2.6.22.9-1mdv2008.0 After running aticonfig --initial I found this in fglrx-install.log [Message] Kernel Module : Trying to install a precompiled kernel module. zibi1981
O.K. I have direct rendering, but on every boot my monitor is being set to 1600x1200 @ 60 Hz (I was working on 1024x768 @ 85 Hz before). After booting-in I can change resolution to what I prefer, but not refresh rate. Nonetheless it last only till next restart. How to resolve this? anyone
All seems to be fine there... Are you sure you have uninstalled all of the fglrx packages with the package manager or urpme...? They might be messing up your new driver install. Mine didn't work with them installed, at least.
zibi1981
What packages do you mean? rpm -qa | grep fglrx command gives me no results. P.S. What's wrong with the fast reply box? I can't press any button on it

anyone
What packages do you mean? rpm -qa | grep fglrx command gives me no results. Well, if it gives you nothing that must mean you have none installed, which is exactly what you want at this point... But I ran out of ideas :/
zibi1981
Sorry to hear  Did anyone succeed with installing those drivers on Mandriva 2008.0? I think something is terribly wrong with this release, as people don't have such problems on 2007.1... If the problem persists, please raise it in Forum Discussion. ;) It's maybe be due to my Opera 9.5 beta, but I'm not sure.
