Mandriva 2008: no sound with Audigy [solved]

I have been using the same machine with Mandrake / Mandriva for four years now, and every time I have upgraded, sound card support has been broken. Until now, no problem -- I always back up /etc before I start, and I run alsaconf after rebooting the new install. Usually, alsaconf takes care of it, and when it doesn't, I edit modprobe.conf to look like the last working version. But now, nothing works. I can get the onboard Intel sound chip to work (on one channel), but hours of fruitless effort have failed to get the Audigy card going. Any help will be deeply appreciated. Hi Jimbob,

 

judging from your kernel version you have 2008 running, right? I'm using a customized version of that kernel with an Audigy 4 running fine, so the setup is quite similar.

 

In /etc/modprobe.conf I've kicked out every sound related entry with no bad consequence; alsa seems to behave more cleanly all in all with the new version. Another detail attracting my attention is this:

Do you have an onboard soundcard/soundchip, parallel with your Audigy card? If so, I'd disable the onboard chip completely. I'd try to shut it down using BIOS settings at boot time. If you're lucky, alsa won't see it afterwards, only recognizing your Audigy card so you can (hopefully) simply use alsaconf and you're ready.

With 2008, disabling the onboard audio is unlikely to stop it showing up in Mandriva. Unfortunately it gets in the way of everything and should NOT, I repeat NOT require one to modify any ,config. It is truly a king size stuffup by someone somewhere.

 

I still have no sound on my 2008 yet all works fine in 2007-Spring even though the disabled device in bios still shows up in Spring.

Thanks to both commenters. When I get home, I'll disable the Intel chip in BIOS (recognizing that it may not help), and note results. Then I will delete all sound lines from modprobe.conf, lather, rinse, and repeat. I'll report back either way.

As promised, here is my update. Bottom line: sound is working.

 

1) Disabled the Intel onboard sound chip in BIOS. Alsaconf did not see the Intel chip. Configured the Audigy card. Still no joy.

 

2) Edited the default /etc/modprobe.conf to delete two lines added by Mandriva 2008 install, viz.:

 

blacklist audio

blacklist snd-usb-audio

 

These were the only two apparently sound-related lines in the file. After rebooting, the Audigy card worked. Only one stereo channel, but I think that is an unrelated problem.

Nice to hear it's working - basically. :)

You should now be able to adjust channel volumes using "alsamixer" as root. After applying your changes, simply quit the app using <ESC>.
