More space [solved]

Here is what my Mandriva 2007 partition looks like:

/ 7.8 gigs

SW 3.8 gigs

/home 26 gigs

When i go onto Mandriva CC it shows i only have 2.7 gigs left.

My question is how do i allow more free space on my harddrive??

Is there a way of resizing one of the above partitions to allow more space

because i split my hd, giving about half to WindowXP, and the other to Mandriva??

You could

1. backup your /home/grimx data in another partition/medium

2. login as root

3. umount /home AND swap (3.8 GB swap is WAAAY too large, you should never need more than 512MB maximum, and 256 MB should work fine).

4. use MCC to delete the /home and swap partitions

5. Recreate the swap and new, smaller /home partitions

6. restore the /home/grimx folder to the new /home partition.

It's quite easier than it sounds.

If you want more space to your / partition, you could flush the urpmi cache, or purge the system logs (which can be huge).

Install Filelight and use it to see just what is filled with data.

It could be .thumbnails or it could be File dumps (icon looks like an old fashioned bomb) or even log files.

It could also be that temp has not been cleared.

Regardless, Filelight will show you where.

By the way there is absolutely NO need for a swap space of 3.8Gbs. Even 1Gb is a waste of space, 500/600mb is more than sufficient regardless of the amount of memory you may have.

Cheers. John.

Wow, that's a _lot_ of wiggling!

According to df I'm only using 3.1 G of my / partition, nowhere near what you're using. And I do all my wiggling in my /home partition, so shrinking my /home to make more room for / would be the absolute _last_ thing I'd contemplate doing!! :o
