Problem with streaming video

Hi everyone,

I'm running Mandriva 2007.1, and I am having a hard time playing streaming video. For example, I wanted to watch

in YouTube that shows the new compiz demo (I found it in Adam's announcement). The problem is that the video starts to load and plays for a short split of a second, and then - nothing. Through the network monitor I see that data is still downloaded, but the video does not play, no matter how much I wait. And it happens also in other sites of streaming video, not just with YouTube.

Is there something wrong with the way I configured the network maybe? I use a LinkSys wireless router, but the problematic specific computer is connected with a wire to the router. And I know it's not a problem with the router itself, because when I switch to M$ the problem disappears.

Ideas, anyone?

Thanks!

If you launch firefox from a terminal and then try to play the video, are there any error messages given?

No, the only message I get is:

GTK Accessibility Module initialized

and then firefox starts smoothly.

BTW, I tried to watch a clip in YouTube via Epiphany. Still doesn't work.

My video works fine, and I always see this message when running from a terminal:

Flash Player: Warning: environment variable G_FILENAME_ENCODING is set and is not UTF-8

I have never seen GTK Accessibility Module initialized

I am a KDE user. You must be using Gnome? I wonder if you have a Gnome specific problem?

I am sorry, I know that is not of any help to you. Maybe a Gnome person out there can give some feedback regarding their experience with flash video?

This is not a problem, unless it's followed by an error.

This could be a result of not having the proper graphics card drivers installed? Do you have them installed?

Yes, I installed the Nvidia GeForce 3 - GeForce 4 driver, which I believe fits my card. Furthermore, I have no problem watching a video which is not streaming but runs locally.

Do you have both of these files in ~/.mozilla/plugins

libflashplayer.so

flashplayer.xpt

(flashplayer.xpt provides scripting support for the flash player)

I'm not sure I found the right file. In root/.mozilla/firefox/ I found a file called pluginreg.dat. Is this the file you meant? Here is its contents:

As you can see, the first item refers to libflashplayer.so. I couldn't find the file flashplayer.xpt explicitly, also some flash player files are mentioned.

Is it the file you referred to?

Is something missing?

Both for Greg2 and daniewicz: I don't have any library called ~/.mozilla/plugins. When I run Greg's command (I hope it's fine I started calling you on first name basis) I get the following message:

bash: cd: /home/username/.mozilla/plugins: No such file or directory

When I look at the libraries in Nautilus all I see is /home/username/.mozilla, and there isn't any plugins library. There is a library called firefox, but this one also doesn't contain any plugins library.

Should I install it? And how? Maybe I should mention that if I look at the installed programs in the MCC, I see the package flash-player-plugin-9.0.48.0-1plf2007.1.i586 is installed.

Please call me Greg. OK, in terminal do (replacing the 'mozilla-firefox-version' if this version is not correct), and post the output of

cd /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.4/plugins && ls |grep flash

and

cd /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.4/components && ls |grep flash
