Logging out and switching users

Hi everyone,

 

Yesterday I logged out from my account and tried to log in to another account. I got the following error message:

 

Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of disk space. Try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem.

 

No need to mention that my session lasted much more than 10 seconds (and why is it important, for that matter?). The generous offer, to log in from failsafe session, was gently declined, as I have no idea how to solve the problem.

 

after clicking the "View details" button I saw the following message:

 

Fatal server Error:
Server already active for display 93
this server is no longer running
remove /tmp/X93-lock and start again
...
Can't register passkey agent
The name org.bluez was not provided by any .service files

 

I was also directed in the original message to ~/xsessions-errors file, but I couldn't find it.

 

What do I do next? I didn't want to delete this file without consulting with you before.

It's safe to delete old lock files which are no longer in use (as would be in your case). The error file your searching is most probably named .xsession-error (notice the leading dot in the filename).

BTW, where should I look for this .xsession-errors file?

So... Is the conclusion still to delete the X93-lock file, or do you think the problem is somewhere else?

I renamed the .X93-lock file, but it didn't help; a new file, again called X93-lock, was created.

 

Any more ideas?

I believe you have something bogus in your hosts file. Can you copypaste it here? (not using Mandriva ATM, but it should likely be /etc/hosts ).

Does it happen if you switch to another login manager, e.g. kdm?

I have a few files called hosts.

 

hosts:

hosts.allow:

Regarding the kdm, I've never used it, and I don't know how to switch to it. If you give me the guidance, I'll try it.

 

So what does it look like, doctor? Tell me the truth: how much time do I have?

OK, I switched it from GDM to XDM (I don't have KDM) through the MCC.When I log out and try to log i as a different user I don't get any messages, I am just thrown back to the original screen where you type the username and password, so that doesn't help either.
