Just realized I seem to be running an i686 system... looking at the headers when I swithc to a virtual terminal (Cntl F1), I told I have a dual processor i686 system. This makes since, as I running an intel pentium 4 processor, currently in 32 bit legacy mode. I thought I needed Mandriva Spring 2007.1 as a i586 system, which is what I downloaded, and what all of my added software is. How will this effect me, and do I need to somehow change? pindakoe Posted June 1, 2007 Report Share Posted June 1, 2007 i686 stands for the direct successor of the pentium (I): Pentium Pro. This has some additions versus the Pentium I, meaning it is somewhat faster at same clock speed. Wikipedia has details. It was primarily aimed at fast workstations & servers, so never much used at home. The next generation for mass market was Pentium II, then III, 4 etc. Here are again diffeernces (introduction of MMX, then SSe, SSE2, SSE3 but these are not so relevant for kernels (but for some applciations).
