Problem with booting in Mandriva Spring

My monitor is a CRT (Sony CPD-E230), so 60 Hz is far not enough. I'm usually working on Windows with 100 Hz on 1024x768 resolution. When I try to use fglrx driver, the mcc installs some ati packages from repositories, and after restart my Mandriva acts as I described above, that is the screen turns black before displaying KDE login menu. The only way to resolve this is to switch back to Vesa. Anyone know how to obtain higher refresh rate with Vesa driver?

EDIT

Meanwhile I found this, but don't know if it would work on Mandriva. Beside I would rather prefer less involving solution than kernel recompiling...
