ferao
I have Mandriva 2007 Spring for x86_64. I removed the x86_64 version of Firefox, and I installed the i586 version, from the Main32 source. I tried to play on yahoo games, but, at the page for loading the game, I got the icon "missing plugins". I loaded the page "Verifying Installation" at www.java.com but I got the icon "missing plugins". I downloaded the java runtime environment from the Sun website, it is the 1.6.0_01 version: jre-6u1-linux-i586-rpm.bin I run it, and it installed without errors. Then I made a symbolic link to /usr/java/jre1.6.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so And i put it in /usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.3/plugins If I run # java -version I get java version "1.6.0_01" Java SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_01-b06) Java HotSpot Client VM (build 1.6.0_01-b06, mixed mode, sharing) In the firefox preferencies window, under the Content tab, I selected Enable Java and Enable JavaScript. I loaded again the page "Verifying Installation" at www.java.com. This time, I didn't get the icon "missing plugins", but I didn't see the applet running. I tried to play on yahoo games, but even there I didn't get the icon "missing plugins" any more, but the games don't load. Everithing seems fine, but Java does not work. What can I do? I can post the output of other commands, if needed. Thanks.
orts
It'll be much easy'er to install java from your package manager. Have you used http://www.mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php to a source list? If yes, just run this as su in konsole urpmi java-sun Then java will installed without any trouble :D
neddie
Yeah, but it seems that java is installed without any trouble, it's just the plugin. By the way, congrats on a very helpful and detailed description of the problem, ferao, I wish all requests were explained so carefully! I would suggest it's a conflict between 32 and 64 bits but you seem to have thought your way round that already - with a 32 bit firefox and 32 bit jre they should play nicely together I would guess. Have you tried going to "about:plugins" in firefox and seeing whether the plugin is listed properly there? I'm assuming you've closed all firefox windows since adding that link to the so. And have you double checked the link with a "ls -l /usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.3/plugins/" to make sure there isn't a typo?

So I downloaded the package from the official site. Now I have found the package you say on urpmi. I will try again with the package I have for a bit, then I will try the package on urpmi. Thank you very much.

The link seems to be ok, and I have closed and reopen firefox before trying. If I remove the link, stuff changes, in that case I get the icon "missing plugin" when viewing a page with some java. Instead with the link in its place I dont get those icons, but simply the part of the window that should contain the java applet is empty. Those links actually have effects. Here is the output of about:plugins. I'm not expert, but it seems ok. ferao
Ok, now I have solved it. Unfortunately I didn't understand what was bad. I simply removed the java package I downloaded from the official site, and I installed the package java-1.6.0-sun (from the non-free sources of the i586 version of Mandriva Spring) via urpmi. (As suggested by orts). Now everything works. Thank you very much to you all for your attempts.
