Good morning everyone!

I tried activating 3D desktop in DELL Inspiron 1501 laptop.

It gave me the following error message:

[root@localhost Desktop]# 3ddesktop

================================================================
3ddesktop will be acquiring images in one moment. Please wait...

Daemon started. Run 3ddesk to activate.

3ddeskd: Please configure hardware acceleration. Exiting.
3ddeskd: glXIsDirect failed, no Direct Rendering possible!
3ddeskd: Please configure hardware acceleration. Exiting.
Server not found after waiting 5 seconds.
Could not find server.
Try starting manually (3ddeskd)

As it said, I tried starting 3ddesktop manually by typing 3ddeskd command.

It gave me the following error message:

[root@localhost Desktop]# 3ddeskd
Daemon started. Run 3ddesk to activate.
[root@localhost Desktop]# 3ddeskd: glXIsDirect failed, no Direct Rendering possible!
3ddeskd: Please configure hardware acceleration. Exiting.

Can some one please help me in configuring 3d desktop in my laptop??

Thank you so much!

You need Open GL, or in other words, good drivers for a good graphics chip in order to have 3d. Since Dell is using the ATI chips for graphics, you need to get the ATI proprietary driver in order to run 3d.

Thank you. Can I install Open GL in my laptop?? If yes, do i need to first uninstall ATI drivers?

Please let me know the procedure for installing Open GL.

Thank you!

If you haven't already done so, use easy-urpmi at the top of this page, be sure to add the plf repos. Then do:

urpmi dkms-ati

select the fglrx driver for your card. Also check to see that you have libmesagl installed.

Thank you. I have done what you said and when i type

urpmi dkms-ati

It says, there is no such package called dkms-ati..

and by the way, does this process remove ati graphics in my laptop and install openGL?

opengl isn't a driver, it's a graphics library. your system still uses the ati card and it's associated drivers. opengl is just a library that is used to basically communicate with the card and tell it how to draw graphics (in simple terms - I don't understand the complexities of it myself).

Have you set up your repos using easy-urpmi? You need the plf-free and plf-non-free repos? It's there!

Open your gui package manger and search for ati, and you should find it.
