install external serial modem

I brought a Best Data external serial modem as

recommended. Earlier post is

https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtopic=39762

and am now trying to setup this modem with the

PC.

I couldn't find any documentation on how to setup

an external modem, just internal modem. I already

searched this forum, the wiki (mandrivausers), and

searched on google. Going nuts! I'm sure it's

documented somewhere. Can someone point me to the

correct documentation?

-----

I'm trying two different ways.

1. via Mandriva Control Center

-> network & internet

-> set up a new network interface (...)

-> modem connection

-> manual choice

and it gives me 8 choices,

ttyS0/COM1

...

ttyS7/COM8

These looks like they are for internal modems.

Now what? Or must I use kppp?

2. via kppp

-> configure ...

-> modems

-> new ...

and it gives numerous choices for the modem hardware.

/dev/modem

/dev/ttyS0

/dev/ttyS1

/dev/ttyS2

/dev/ttyS3

/dev/ttyS4

/dev/ttyI0

/dev/ttyI1

/dev/ttyI2

/dev/ttyI3

/dev/ttyACM0

/dev/ttyACM1

/dev/ttyACM2

/dev/ttyACM3

/dev/ttyUSB0

/dev/ttyUSB1

/dev/ttyUSB2

/dev/ttyUSB3

/dev/tts/0

/dev/tts/1

/dev/tts/2

/dev/tts/3

/dev/rfcomm0

/dev/rfcomm1

/dev/rfcomm2

/dev/rfcomm3

/dev/ircomm0

/dev/ircomm1

/dev/ircomm2

/dev/ircomm3

/dev/ttySL0

/dev/ttySL1

/dev/ttySL2

/dev/ttySL3

/dev/ttySHSF0

/dev/ttySHSF1

/dev/ttySHSF2

/dev/ttySHSF3

Which one is correct? [i already doubt it's

COM or USB.] I'm using a 1.5"x.25" serial

cable (male end on the cable and female end

on the PC - male end has alot of pointy needles).

Also need to choose for

flow control

hardware [CRTSCTS]

software [XON/XOFF]

none

line termination

CR

LF

CR/LF

connection speed

460800

230400

115200

57600

38400

19200

9600

2400

Thank in advance for any help.

Nope, these are COM ports, they aren't internal or external, they're just means by which the system can communicate with serial (and some other) devices. Most likely you'll find your modem to be on ttyS0/COM1 - pick that option and see if Mandriva is able to initialize it. Also, you should be able to find the modem listed in the Hardware section of the Control Center (assuming it was plugged in and powered on at boot, I think), and if you select it you should get a list of information about the device, possibly including which TTY/COM it's on.

This is how I set up my Amigo serial modem

->network & internet

-> set up a new network interface (...)

-> modem connection

Except my modem was already identified by name, so I just clicked next, next, next and was done. No need to select a com port or anything. So the modem should have been detected on boot. Is the AC adapter plugged in? Have you confirmed that the modem works by installing it in Windows?

Installation should be really easy, so if you are having problems, I would suspect something hardware-related. Good luck and let us know how it goes. If your modem turns out to be defective, Newegg has a really good cheap one $23 made by Amigo that I am currently using and can highly recommend.
