scarecrow
You will have to remove the drive from your box, then open it carefully. Once you have free access to the laser and the sled, clean the laser with alcohol (if it is a glass-lens, otherwise use special cleaning-liquid). Then remove all dust from the sled and move the sled with the laser with gentle force several times completely back and forth. That is usually all that needs to be done. Alcohol will completely destroy the plastic lens. Even the most expensive drives now (Plextors) have plastic lenses... I'd rather do what Arctic suggested, and clean the lens blowing with a can of compressed air (available at any electronics' store for little money) for approx. 10-15 seconds from a distance of 15-20 cm from the lens. Do not spray more than 15 seconds, as the compressed air may freeze and damage the servo mechanism of the lens. Also, even if you pick the solvent solution, try to touch the lens with extreme care, as any lens movement may misalign it, and send it to the cleaners... tyme
as the compressed air may freeze and damage the servo mechanism of the lens. Also be sure to keep the can in an upright position, don't turn it upside down or lean it on it's side. There are some CD-ROM cleaners out there that you can buy specifically for cleaning cd reader lenses. they can be a bit pricey though.
