I have just clean installed Mandriva2007 on a young womans AMD 64 3200 on Gigabyte Mainboard (nvidia).

Was on Mandriva 2006 prior and K3B burnt DVD discs AOK. It currently gives the error shown in the two attachments.

I have uninstalled every piece of packages that k3b uses as well as hidden setings files and done reinstall of all latest packages for and including k3b (no cooker stuff............yet). Tried different settings but still nogo

Even tried changing over the ide positions. No go. The burner does ordinary CDs ok, whether -r or +r or rw.

Has anyone any ideas on this, please. Got to keep a Linux lady happy.

Cheers. John.

Even tried changing over the ide positions

You mean physically plugging the ribbon into another IDE channel?

I imagine the HD and dvd drive have each a ribbon that

each go on a different IDE channel (the HD and dvd not on same ribbon)

Yurk, nasty problem. Have no direct answer. So here is a scater of ideas:

Can you try downgrading k3b to earlier version? I have compiled

the tar.gz in the past this is not too bad to do for k3b

Try latest version?

Check hdparm settings? DMA?

It is not a media issue...

have you tried a command line burn? growisofs seems to be the problem. remove reinstall growisofs?

Any fancy BIOS options? probably not an issue anyway from what you describe

Bit stumped here

Thank you all. Success at last, especially due to thyme suggestion. Seems the problem was across a lot of Linux OSs and not just Mandriva and only with the 64bit systems.

The thing that did the trick was the following:-

Open K3B. Click on Settings, then Configure K3B, then Writing, then Advanced.

Put a X in Manual writing application selection and change the default value to 10Mb. (can be up to 25 but didn't need it. Not recommended above 30 or possible other problems)

Note :- After making the change, it is necessary to close K3B and reopen it again before using it.

Burned a data DVD and an iso DVD with no problems.

Did not need to do some of the other seemingly potentially extreme suggestions.

However doing a console as root and typing in .....chmod 755 /usr/bin/growisofs (note the space before and after the 755)

may be helpful as an extra if you still encounter some degree of problem.

My young friend will be most pleased.

Cheers and thanks again. John.

This thread can now be happily marked, SOLVED.
