Hey,

I am running MDK 9.0 and I want to be able to use programs such as Dreamweaver MX for web development. Does anyone know whether this is possible?

I have been looking at an application called WINE, does anyone use it? Do i have to have a Windows system on the Linux PC or not? I have a windows machine on the network! If someone could explain if it is possible to get it working or whether there is an alternative I would be most grateful

Thanks in advance for any posts

Thanks

Hi Longboarder

Using Wine for such a big application (Dreamweaver) is quite tough. Personnally, I don't think anyone has ever got it to work... I think you should look for Win4lin or VMWare. Those two programs permits you to run Windows inside Linux. It's a good way to put Windows in a windows .. hihi. You'll be able to run any application you like in those programs.

www.vmware.com

Good luck!

The best solution is always to find a native Linux alternative. There is usually an app some where to replace which windows program you used to use.

When it comes to actually running Windows software you have two choices. The first is you mentioned Wine, or one of its many off shoots. Wine acts like a translater converting the Windows API calls into Linux API calls. It does not need a copy of Windows, but can make use of one (questionable whether its worth it).

How much luck you have with Wine depends greatly on what you want to do. There are specialist versions like WineX for games or Crossover for MS Office. Small simple apps should work under Wine, but it could well take some time to get working.

The other option is to have a virtual copy of Windows. Apps like VMWARE or Win4Lin allow you run a copy of Windows on a virtual computer within Linux. This generally more successful as it requires no emulation as such, but it also slower and requires a beefy system.

Your best bet if you definitely want to use a particular app under Linux is to a Google search for it. (eg "Dreamweaver MX"+"Linux")

I know this is fairly vague advice, if you need more just post again.

Like it or not, there's no linux equivalent for Dreamweaver (not that I think there should be).

There are versions of Dreamweaver that work more or less with Wine. Wine is interesting because you don't need an actual Windows installation. You use the Win32 program as you would a Linux one.

In Wine Apps Database, it is said that at least Dreamweaver 2 (the now-freeware version) works almost flawlessly. You could begin with that.

If that's not what you want, then indeed Win4Lin seems to be a good choice, but you'll have to own a Windows license.

Of course, if all you want is to be able to run Dreamweaver from your PC without moving, and you have a WinPC on your network, you could install a TightVNC or VNC server (whichever works fastest for you) on this WinPC, and a TightVNC or VNC client on your Linux machine; then you'll be able to control this distant WinPC from your Linux machine (with some slowdown, though). If that's OK for you, then the only thing left (not required) is to set some file-sharing between the two machines, using Samba.

Yves.

Dreamweaver 4 works with Win4Lin I'm not sure if this is the sort of solution your looking for.

Win4Lin works well but it's expensive. Really its a way to run Windows 98 or ME on a Linux partiton. Sort of defeats the purpose.

Weird though, 98 ran better for me under Win4Lin (3.0) than it ever did on it's own system!

I think there are some problems with the MX versions of Macromedia products.

Did you have a look at Crossover?
