sometimes when logging into mandriva from the login screen, instead of getting anywhere, the screen turns black and some odd colors appear. sometimes when this happens, the mouse is visible but unable to click anything, other times the desktop is partially visible, but nothing can be clicked (or shows it is clicked), and to go anywhere i need to press ctrl alt bkspace and try again.... anyone have this problem? is it software or hardware related? the computer I'm using is a compaq presario 1500, with an IGP video card (ati drivers)

I don't know. I can only suggest you test different configurations. I.e.,

1.

Change monitor

(to see if this a monitor-specific problem; however it could be Mandriva's problem

in not recognizing your monitor)

2.

Boot with a liveCD like knoppix, Ubuntu, SimplyMepis, etc.

(to see if this a Mandriva's problem)

3.

Use that troublesome monitor on another machine, especially a window machine.

(to see if the monitor is working)

4.

etc (dream up of other tests and narrow the problem down)

Sounds like you have a problem with your video driver, try configuring vesa. Press CTRL-ALT-F1 to get a console prompt, then login as root and enter the password. Then:

service dm stop

to stop the running system, then do:

mcc

go into display and then configure for the vesa card, and see how you get on. After this, just do:

service dm start

and it'll start the desktop again, and automatically switch you to it. Or alternatively, type:

reboot

to restart your system if you prefer.
