Runlevel

Recommended Posts

Runlevel 5 is the default runlevel for running X at startup (unless you use Slackware, or a Slackware clone, when the analogous runlevel is 4). Runlevel 3 is for multiuser console login, and runlevel 1 for safe mode (recovery) login.

The other runlevels are usually reserved, although some distros may use them regularly- consult your distro's manual.

Just one correction, scarecrow: Debian systems use inittab 2 as default multiuser setting. ;)

Thanks for reminding.

Usually switching runlevels is as simple as opening a root console and typing in

init n

(n can be from zero to six)

"init 0" and "init 6" are equivalent to the "halt" and "reboot" commands, respectively, although this may not apply for few (really few) initscripts.
