  1. Ah I see. I read this from the xine site: The image looks strange, it is shifted, cropped or shows weird lines! This points to a problem with the Xv extension, which is used by xine to display the video image. To verify this, try running xine with the XShm video output plugin: xine -V XShm If that works fine, you just proved, that the Xv extension is buggy. xine will remember the last used video output plugin, so the setting will stay at XShm. You could simply continue using this, but XShm is a lot slower than Xv, so read on and see if you can get it working. Usually you should look for updated versions of the X driver module that belongs to your graphics card. Other possibilites are limitations in either your X driver module or your graphics hardware. If your card could somehow be running out of ressources (graphics RAM perhaps) and displays an incorrect Xv overlay because of that, try reducing the display resolution and/or colour depth. Consult the next question for more details on Xv. How can I make xine use the Xv extension and what drivers do I need? xine will normally use Xv by default if it is available. In some cases you might need to choose Xv playback manually (when the ~/.xine/config file for some reason says that you want to use XShm): xine -V Xv If this doesn't work for you, it may be possible that Xv is not present on your system. First you need to install/use X.org or XFree 4.x. Once you got that you have to make sure the X drivers you're using are supporting Xv on your hardware. Here are some hints for individual gfx chips: If I run into this problem again, I will try X.org vs XFree. When I did the following: xine -V XShm The lines went away. So I figured the Xv extension like it said was buggy. How would I update that exactly? Is it apart of x.org or Xfree86?
  2. Thanks for the heads up. It's set to init 5. I updated X86 following these instructions ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.7.0/binaries/Install. Then a quick reboot and thats when this started. When I try to perform the test in XFdrake I get (EE) Failed to initialize GLK extension (Compatible Nvidia X driver not found.) Try to change some parameters. I ran this inside of an X session it seems. I thing this is how got into trouble ><! If you run the installer from within an X session (the installer checks if $DISPLAY is set), you will be warned that doing so is not a good idea. Unless you have a good reason for knowing that this will not be a problem, you should exit your X session, including stopping xdm or equivalent if it is running, before continuing. If you ignore this warning and run into prob- lems, well, you were warned!
  3. The xserver message has not come up anymore. But the system does not login directly without stopping at the command line.
  4. In the course of trying to get Xine to display properly I installed XFree 86's newest version. I used the install.sh to direct me on which files to add to the directory. I did fix the issue with the funky display, but now KDE will not automatically start. It gives me a commandline login . Entering the UN and PW work and I simply press "kde" to get it up and going. I'm gonna be giving this PC away when done. Is there any thing I can do to fix it ? When I shutdown I do get something that says that Xserver is shutting down or that I destroyed it. Also I don't get the options to shutdown when I log off. I have word for word the same symptoms listed here. https://mandrivausers.org/index.php?showtop...02&hl=Xfree
  5. I upgraded without reading the info on it. It seems that the atheros fix will not come until the final realease ><! My impression so far is the RC is really slow. 2+ hours to install. Lots of HDD access. It's pretty though. KDE really has a nice new look to it. They have included alot more applications.
  6. As Mandriva Linux 2008 marks a new basesystem (after the previous basesystem was used for Mandriva Linux 2007 and 2007 Spring), it includes a new kernel revision. 2.6.22 adds support for new hardware and also has many interesting new features. Perhaps the biggest new feature visible to end users is the new Devicescape (mac80211) wireless networking stack, which provides a superior base with much more common code than the previous kernel wireless stack, allowing drivers to be more reliable and functional. This was taken off the Mandriva site. It may be a problem fixed in 2008 release. There are 2 releases of it right now. I'm downloading it and am going to install. I'll let you know how it goes. http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Development/Id...a_2008#Hardware The link above seems to talk about better support for madwifi-ng drivers as well. Alternative kernels For stability purposes, Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring uses the same kernel series as Mandriva Linux 2007: 2.6.17. Support for some hardware has been backported from later kernel versions; however, there are still some pieces of hardware that are supported by later kernels but not by the official Mandriva kernel (for instance, some integrated sound and wireless chipsets). If you have a piece of hardware that you believe may be supported by a later kernel, you may try one of the alternative kernels available in Mandriva Linux. Lastly from the Spring release website it talks about the previous kernel having upgrades, but not having the same functionality as the new one. It seems to me that maybe you and I should upgrade.

Heya guys. I've got a Toshiba L25-S119 laptop which has an atheros chipset in it. I can setup a wireless connection and it works but after some time the connection lags out and i have no connection to the net. I then used a pcmcia card from Iblitzz which has 5213 chipset also made by Atheros. The same type of problem occurs with it. Have any of you experienced this? When i go into the hardware detection I'm prompted by a message from mandriva club for updates. Is there a fix i can apply to get my wireless cards to continue to operate?
  8. What's libdvdcss2? I downloaded it and it now works.
  9. I did the urpmi xvinfo and not that's just fine. I try to watch the DVD and get this. This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.4. © 2000-2004 The xine Team. libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable. My only problem is that I do have livdvdcss installed. 10. I've got livdvdcss installed. The error about xvinfo I haven't seen before. Nor have I seen the error about the "hint" in xine-check. It does not seem important as the other by the wording. I'll give urpmi xvinfo a try.
  11. Hello guys. New computer, new challange getting DVD's to play. I'm getting the following error during xine-check: Please be patient, this script may take a while to run... [OUCH!!] You're running me with root permissions? You should definitely run xine as normal user, not root. Running it as root will expose you to some severe security issues. This script should run as the same user that you would use to run xine. If you run me as root (as you currently are), I cannot check if your real-life user has sufficient permissions... Unless you want to recheck something with root permissions, you should abort me now (press Ctrl-C) and run me from your usual account. press <enter> to continue... Xv has been introduced with XFree86 4.0, so if you're still using an older X server, you might consider an upgrade. Note: You also need a Graphics card that has Xv driver support. You might want to check the XFree86 homepage before upgrading: http://www.xfree86.org press <enter> to continue... I the last error seems to be the most important. I've no idea how to deal with it. I've other computers with mandriva installed with the same hardware. This problem is pretty new. Anyways i'd appreciate any help offered. Thanks.
  12. Man, still no luck. I got all the SW from the gui based updater. I the SW i'm trying to install still tells me that it can't find GTK even if it is checked on the system. from the following error. checking for pkg-config... /usr/bin/pkg-config checking for gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.0... Package gtk+-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path. Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gtk+-2.0.pc' to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable No package 'gtk+-2.0' found configure: error: Library requirements (gtk+-2.0 >= 2.0.0) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them. It's similiar to the other error mentioned above. I've done some research on these *.pc files and pkg-config and made an attempt to change the directory where it find or looks for them. Very wierd problem.
  13. I am trying to install gtk to my system and I am continuing to get this error message. I installed all of the dependencies with no install errors, but continue to get the error. Can anyone explain to me how to fix this? checking for BASE_DEPENDENCIES... configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.7.1 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.9.0 cairo >= 0.9.2) were not met. Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively you may set the BASE_DEPENDENCIES_CFLAGS and BASE_DEPENDENCIES_LIBS environment variables to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details. I've given it another try. So far, no luck. I downloaded all the dependencies from the gtk site. Still getting the error /cry [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  14. I've bumped into a very frustrating problem while trying to install my 536EP modem. I've downloaded the drivers from the intel site and follow the instructions found in the readme.txt file which are. Login as root. make clean make 536 make install. I then get the following output when doing make 536 [root@localhost Intel-536]# make clean cd coredrv; make clean make[1]: Entering directory `/home/paul/Documents/Intel-536/coredrv' rm -f *.ko *.o *~ core make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/paul/Documents/Intel-536/coredrv' rm -f *.o *.ko [root@localhost Intel-536]# make 536 Module precompile check Current running kernel is: 2.6.17-8mdv /lib/modules... autoconf.h exists diff: /boot/vmlinuz.autoconf.h: No such file or directory autoconf.h matches running kernel diff: /boot/vmlinuz.version.h: No such file or directory version.h matches running kernel uname -r|grep "2.6" && \ cd coredrv && make 536core_26 && \ cp Intel536.ko .. && cd .. && \ strip --strip-debug Intel536.ko && \ exit; \ ls Intel536.ko >/dev/null 2>&1 || uname -r | grep "2.6" && echo "Failed to build driver" && exit; \ if [ ]; then \ cd coredrv; make TARGET=TARGET_SELAH KERNEL_SOURCE_PATH= "PSTN_DEF=-DTARGET_SELAH -DTARGET_LINUX -DLINUX" 536core; \ else \ cd coredrv; make TARGET=TARGET_SELAH KERNEL_INCLUDES=/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include \ "PSTN_DEF=-DTARGET_SELAH -DTARGET_LINUX -DLINUX" 536core; \ fi; \ cp Intel536.o ..; \ if [ -a /boot/vmlinuz.version.h ]; then \ cp /boot/vmlinuz.version.h /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include/linux/version.h;\ fi 2.6.17-8mdv make[1]: Entering directory `/home/paul/Documents/Intel-536/coredrv' make -C /lib/modules/2.6.17-8mdv/build SUBDIRS=/home/paul/Documents/Intel-536/coredrv modules make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.17-8mdv' WARNING: Symbol version dump /usr/src/linux-2.6.17-8mdv/Module.symvers is missing; modules will have no dependencies and modversions. Low and behold some hard nosed work and persistance paid off. I found a FTP site that apparently had modified drivers for my device. Or should I say mandriva 2007. It's so strange. I remember the ways i fixed it in previous releases and the fix almost is always different in the next release. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that my device is supported, but it took a day and a half of reasearch. All in all I suppose it beats installing Vista and finding out that the mfgr of a sound card you just purchased for XP just ups and decides not to make a Vista driver. /fume By the way here's the website. http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/i...ilippe.Vouters/
