Nvidia driver problem

My PC has an Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4600, so i used urpmi to install the proprietary Nvidia driver and its dependencies. Then I went into XFdrake and selected my graphics card (GeForce 4 (Generic)) and then logged out for the changes to take effect. However, after logging out i was left at a command line login prompt instead of X. so I logged in and entered the command startx and got this error:

Since i could get X to start i restarted my PC and then X came up, however any program that used openGL hardware acceleration ended the moment i started them.

If you've installed the drivers from Nvidia, all you need to do is edit the entry that says:

 

driver "nv"

 

and change it to:

 

driver "nvidia"

 

and it'll work. Don't use the gui, it selects the default drivers with Mandriva.

I used the plf pakages, not the installer from nvidia.

 

For some reason, installing nvidia through urpmi doesnt work. Download the appropriate nvidia '.run' file from the nvidia website and follow the instructions given there. The installation is easy and the card will more often then not work.

I have nvidia 8762 drivers installed and it has :

 Option "UseEDID" "FALSE"

instead of the one above. May not seem important but try and see.
