Steve Scrimpshire Posted March 2, 2003 Report Share Posted March 2, 2003 I have searched the web and the boards and have not found the solution to my problem. I have an Ensoniq soundcard (SB) that uses the es1371 driver (compiled as a module). Certain sounds are very low, but not all. I've run aumix and cranked everything way up but when I use the sound configurator in MCC, I get almost inaudible sound even with the volume on my speakers cranked way up. Sound from the web is the same and window manager event sounds. CDs play ok (but their volume is lower than what I would expect). Here's what I get when I run MCC from the console and run the sound configuration tool: No volume mixer available. So I'll not be able to adjust volume (In the terminal). etc/modules.conf: pre-install pcmcia_core CARDMGR_OPTS=-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start alias eth0 il alias usb-interface usb-ohci alias /dev/ttySHCF[0-9]* hcfpciserial alias char-major-240 hcfpciserial alias /dev/cuaHCF[0-9]* hcfpciserial alias char-major-241 hcfpciserial alias /dev/modem hcfpciserial options hcfpciserial serialmajor=240 calloutmajor=241 pcivendorid=0x14F1 pcideviceid=0x1036 alias char-major-195 nvidia alias sound-slot-0 es1371 [root@omar omar]# ls -l /dev/mixer* crw-rw-rw- 1 omar audio 14, 0 Aug 30 2001 /dev/mixer crw------- 1 omar audio 14, 16 Aug 30 2001 /dev/mixer1 [root@omar omar]# ls -l /dev/snd lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Feb 24 12:39 /dev/snd -> ../proc/asound/dev [root@omar omar]# ls -l /proc/asound/dev ls: /proc/asound/dev: No such file or directory [root@omar omar]# ls -l /dev/dsp crw------- 1 omar audio 14, 3 Aug 30 2001 /dev/dsp [root@omar omar]# ls -l /dev/audio crw------- 1 omar audio 14, 4 Aug 30 2001 /dev/audio [root@omar omar]# ls -l /dev/sound ls: /dev/sound: No such file or directory [root@omar omar]# insmod soundcore Using /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/sound/soundcore.o: couldn't find the kernel version the module was compiled for [root@omar omar]# modprobe soundcore modprobe: Can't locate module soundcore [root@omar omar]# lsmod Module Size Used by es1371 26368 0 ac97_codec 10048 0 [es1371] ppp_deflate 2992 0 (autoclean) zlib_inflate 19072 0 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate] zlib_deflate 18592 0 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate] bsd_comp 4064 0 (autoclean) ppp_async 6416 1 (autoclean) ppp_generic 18656 3 (autoclean) [ppp_deflate bsd_comp ppp_async] slhc 4672 0 (autoclean) [ppp_generic] hcfpciserial 22400 1 (autoclean) hcfpciengine 886240 0 (autoclean) [hcfpciserial] hcfpciosspec 15536 1 (autoclean) [hcfpciserial hcfpciengine] nvidia 1468272 20 (autoclean) floppy 46800 0 (autoclean) ipt_REJECT 2880 2 (autoclean) scanner 8720 0 (unused) ipt_limit 880 10 (autoclean) ip_conntrack_irc 3120 1 (autoclean) ip_nat_irc 2368 0 (unused) ip_nat_ftp 2976 0 (unused) ipt_MASQUERADE 1312 2 (autoclean) printer 6576 0 ipt_state 576 12 (autoclean) ipt_LOG 3408 10 ip_conntrack_ftp 3824 1 iptable_mangle 2128 0 (autoclean) (unused) iptable_nat 15120 3 (autoclean) [ip_nat_irc ip_nat_ftp ipt_MASQUERADE] ip_conntrack 17392 4 (autoclean) [ip_conntrack_irc ip_nat_irc ip_nat_ftp ipt_MASQUERADE ipt_state ip_conntrack_ftp iptable_nat] iptable_filter 1680 1 (autoclean) ip_tables 10976 10 [ipt_REJECT ipt_limit ipt_MASQUERADE ipt_state ipt_LOG iptable_mangle iptable_nat iptable_filter] usb-ohci 17952 0 (unused) il 58208 1 (autoclean) vfat 9776 1 (autoclean) fat 30464 0 (autoclean) [vfat] unix 13680 212 (autoclean) reiserfs 164672 3 [root@omar omar]# cat /proc/interrupts CPU0 0: 13445908 XT-PIC timer 1: 48922 XT-PIC keyboard 2: 0 XT-PIC cascade 9: 431378 XT-PIC eth0, es1371 10: 32 XT-PIC usb-ohci 11: 17027508 XT-PIC nvidia, hcf 12: 3482629 XT-PIC PS/2 Mouse 14: 338013 XT-PIC ide0 15: 858 XT-PIC ide1 NMI: 0 LOC: 13445681 ERR: 8145 MIS: 0 [root@omar omar]# cat /proc/ioports 0000-001f : dma1 0020-003f : pic1 0040-005f : timer 0060-006f : keyboard 0080-008f : dma page reg 00a0-00bf : pic2 00c0-00df : dma2 00f0-00ff : fpu 0170-0177 : ide1 01f0-01f7 : ide0 0376-0376 : ide1 03c0-03df : vga+ 03f6-03f6 : ide0 03f8-03ff : serial(auto) 0cf8-0cff : PCI conf1 cb00-cb0f : Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-756 [Viper] IDE cb00-cb07 : ide0 cb08-cb0f : ide1 e000-efff : PCI Bus #01 ff00-ff3f : Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] ff00-ff3f : es1371 ffe0-ffe7 : Conexant HCF 56k Data/Fax/Voice/Spkp Modem fff4-fff7 : Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-751 [Irongate] System Controller [root@omar omar]# cat /proc/iomem 00000000-0009fbff : System RAM 0009fc00-0009ffff : reserved 000a0000-000bffff : Video RAM area 000c0000-000c7fff : Video ROM 000f0000-000fffff : System ROM 00100000-17fdffff : System RAM 00100000-00266864 : Kernel code 00266865-002f8077 : Kernel data 17fe0000-17ff7fff : ACPI Tables 17ff8000-17ffffff : ACPI Non-volatile Storage f0800000-f48fffff : PCI Bus #01 f2000000-f3ffffff : nVidia Corporation RIVA TNT2 Model 64 f8000000-fbffffff : Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-751 [Irongate] System Controller fc9ff000-fc9fffff : Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-751 [Irongate] System Controller fca00000-feafffff : PCI Bus #01 fd000000-fdffffff : nVidia Corporation RIVA TNT2 Model 64 febe0000-febeffff : Conexant HCF 56k Data/Fax/Voice/Spkp Modem febfe000-febfefff : PCI device feda:a0fa (Epigram Inc) febff000-febfffff : Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-756 [Viper] USB febff000-febfffff : usb-ohci fff80000-ffffffff : reserved That's all I can think of to post for help. qnr Posted March 2, 2003 Report Share Posted March 2, 2003 To be honest, I haven't read everything you posted, but I'm just wondering, since it didn't say "no mixer device" if it's talking about having a particular mixer installed.... aumix, nmix, nmixer, etc. I know you say you have aumix, but I used to have problems getting it to save configurations Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
qnr Posted March 2, 2003 Report Share Posted March 2, 2003 Since you have a permanent record here of what your current settings are, maybe you could try a : root@linux:/home/terry# ln -sf /devices/sound/mixer /dev/mixer or ln -sbf ... if you want to make an automatic backup Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Steve Scrimpshire Posted March 2, 2003 Author Report Share Posted March 2, 2003 Whoops. I'm not using devfs. Typo. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Steve Scrimpshire Posted March 2, 2003 Author Report Share Posted March 2, 2003 I don't have a /devices directory. I'm in the process of recompiling my kernel and adding OSS modules. Don't know if that will help or not. And, DUH, this should be posted in Hardware. Sorry. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Steve Scrimpshire Posted March 3, 2003 Author Report Share Posted March 3, 2003 I recompiled with the OSS drivers as a module and now I have proper sound. I still get the very low volume when I try to run the sound configuration utility in MCC and the 'no mixer available' error, though. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Steve Scrimpshire Posted March 3, 2003 Author Report Share Posted March 3, 2003 Ok, because I auto-login my other user (laluna) to X and Gnome, she owns all the /dev/mixer, /dev/audio....so I solved that by adding her group to my user omar. I now have a louder sound in the sound configurator, but still get the mixer error and it takes a lot longer for it to play the sound....kinda hangs for almost a minute before it actually plays the 8 bit sample. Any ideas anyone? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
