oldnoob
I was wondering what the difference is between: 1. installing driver by urmpi ati-xorg, or 2. downloading and installing ATI Proprietary linux driver manually are there pros and cons? ps. I dont really understand the XFree86 and xorg stuff!
tyme
Xorg is a fork of XFree86. Some time ago it was decided that XFree86 wasn't moving along fast enough, and various other issues with how it was being handled (change of license, etc.), so Xorg was started based on the existing XFree86 code. The only real difference between the two options you've mentioned is that 1 is less likely to be the most recent driver, where as with 2 you will always get the newest driver. Also, with 1 you don't have to compile the driver yourself (hence no need to install kernel-headers) which may be easier for some users. oldnoob
Thanks for the very informative/helpful reply Based on this I will opt for easy urpmi. If I have any problems I can always uninstall and go option 2 for newer driver instead. Thanks again
lavaeolus
one note: it depends on what ati-card you have, since older cards are not supported by the proprietary ati-driver
