    scanner setup

I have just purchased a cheap muli function printer, a epson stylus cx3900 as I have seen on linuxprinting.org that it works on linux. When booting linux it saw the printer and I selected a epson stylus cx3805 from the printer list as suggested on linuxprinting.org and all appears to be working well. I tried setting up the scanner from mcc choosing the 3805 and various other models but it did not set up the scanner. So I downloaded the avasys epson iscan software (rpm) which is supposed to set the scanner up if sane-backend is installed which it is. but when I run the rpm I get this message: [root@localhost Scanner rpm]# rpm -i iscan-2.5.0-0.c2.i386.rpm file /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa.so.1.0.15 from install of iscan-2.5.0-0.c2 conflicts with file from package libsane1-1.0.18-7mdv2007.0 file /usr/share/locale/en@boldquot/LC_MESSAGES/iscan.mo from install of iscan-2.5.0-0.c2 conflicts with file from package sane-backends-1.0.18-7mdv2007.0 file /usr/share/locale/en@quot/LC_MESSAGES/iscan.mo from install of iscan-2.5.0-0.c2 conflicts with file from package sane-backends-1.0.18-7mdv2007.0 [root@localhost Scanner rpm]# Can someone tell me what this means or how I might resolve it? Thanks
  2. I have got it working now. The problem appears to be with the lsdvd binary from my mandriva repositories, lsdvd 0.16-1mdv2007. I have replaced it with 0.15 from my 2006 install, and now it works, for me. The chapters in the dvd now display. According to sourceforge there is a bug and a patch for 0.16, but the patch didn't work, for me anyway.

    3d desktop

Thanks, that got my system back to normal. I booted in failsafe and ran drakx11 and chose radeon instead of radeon fglrx. I still have no 3d desktop even though I can choose aiglx now, but I guess I can live without it. Cheers

    3d desktop

I have come to the conclusion that mandriva 2007, my hardware and 3d desktop aint going to work together. After installing proprietry driver from ati website for my radeon 9250 which then wouldnt let me start x anymore. (driver worked in 2006 and 10.1). So I uninstalled it and used dkms-ati from the mandriva repositories, ran drakeconfig selected new driver when prompted, logged out and in again, all appears ok. I go to mcc to 3d desktop and my hardware doesnt support 3d. So I do a restart, back to mcc-3d options are available now, but not the preferred choice of aiglx, the second choice only, glx from memory. I select afew plugins wobble, cube etc.., and exit. now I have to log out for changes to take effect. I do so. Upon logging in everything is going dead slow, title bars on windows when they eventually open have vertical lines going through them. So I go to mcc to turn off 3d This takes several minutes only to find out that it is switched off already with a message about my hardware not supporting 3d again! So after another restart, with everything going so slow, if I even try to start mcc it just logs me out after about 5 minutes of inactivity. I only tried to get 3d working after playing with a FC6 live cd, one mouse click in a preference and it was working fine. no such luck with a mandriva 2007 live cd. I am not so concerned about a 3d desktop, it would have been nice, but all i want is my system back, it is unusable in its current state ( I am writing this from my laptop although i could boot 2006 from my desktop if necessary). Any suggestions on how to restore it would be great otherwise my only idea is to system reinstall which I would like to avoid. Thanks

    K3b [solved]

I am having slow writing speeds for dvd's in k3b, 2 speed. In the dialogue as it starts writing, it says start writing at 8 speed which is what the discs and drive support, but down the bottom where it says estimated writing speed, it only gets up to 2x,andit takes ages for the discs to write. CD's only achieve 10x but the discs and writer are capable of 48x. This only happens in mdv2007, in 2006 i achieve the correct speeds or very close to it. I cant see any difference in settings of k3b between the two, although 2006 uses k3b 0.12.4 and 2007 uses 0.12.17. hdparm returns: IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit) unmaskirq = 0 (off) using_dma = 1 (on) keepsettings = 0 (off) readonly = 0 (off) readahead = 256 (on) HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device Does anyone have any ideas?
  8. Thanks, that got it working. Just removed jamvm from /usr/bin/ & /usr/share/ and now azureus picks up the java 1.5.0-10 that I installed yesterday. Thanks again and merry xmas Pete
  9. If I do have another java installed, I dont know where it is. The only reference I found to 1.4.2 were sym links and when I right mouse click and go to properties to see where they point to the directory is ../../../../../../usr/bin/cij and ../../../../../../usr/bin/jamvm which when I type that into a location bar in konqueror just brings up a google page as if I had typed it into the search bar. Am I missing something very simple here?
  10. jjava -version returns: ava version "1.4.2" JamVM version 1.4.3 Copyright © 2003-2006 Robert Lougher <rob@lougher.org.uk> changing the Program direcrory made no difference Also after doing a search for java I located links for 1.4.2 on the followin places: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-gcj-1.4.2.0/jre/bin/ /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-jamvm-1.4.2.0/jre/bin/
  11. I am having trouble getting azureus working in mdv 2007. I have have read a recent post with the same issue but I am still having java problems. After failed attempt with urpmi azureus, I then downloaded it from sourceforge and got the following error: Starting Azureus... Java exec found in PATH. Verifying... Suitable java version found [java = 1.4.2] Configuring environment... Loading Azureus: java -Xms16m -Xmx128m -cp "/home/pete/azureus/Azureus2.jar:/home/pete/azureus/swt.jar" -Djava.library.path="/home/pete/azureus" -Dazureus.install.path="/home/pete/azureus" org.gudy.azureus2.ui.swt.Main '' ./azureus: line 112: 6886 Segmentation fault ${JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR}java -Xms16m -Xmx128m -cp "${CLASSPATH}" -Djava.library.path="${PROGRAM_DIR}" -Dazureus.install.path="${PROGRAM_DIR}" org.gudy.azureus2.ui.swt.Main "$@" Azureus TERMINATED. Then after modifing the script to point to my java directory: #!/bin/bash ######## CONFIGURATION OPTIONS ######## JAVA_PROGRAM_DIR="" # use full path to java bin dir, ex. "/usr/java/jre1.5.0_10/bin/" #PROGRAM_DIR="/home/username/apps/azureus" # use full path to Azureus bin dir ####################################### I get exactly the same error as above, which is confusing me as I have jre1.5.0_10 installed so why does it say: Suitable java version found [java = 1.4.2]? I did have trouble with getting java installed. initally java applets would not work in my browsers so in my ignorance I manually deleted the java folder and reinstalled. I had to use the --force option as it was saying it was already installed, but after that all works properly in my browsers. jre1.5.0_10 is the only version I have installed on my system so can anyone explain why azureus thinks it has detected java 1.4.2
  12. Sorry for the late reply But yes I do have libdvdcss 2-1.2.9-3plf2007.0 installed
  13. Hi I am trying to migrate from mdv 2006 to 2007, but acidrip is causing me some grief. I do hope it works in 2007, cause when I start it and click on the load button, down the bottom left it says "DVD read ok" but nothing shows up in the list. I did install it through mcc so I would have thought any dependancies would be installed if necessary. This happens if I use the default path of /dev/dvd or if i copy to hard drive first and try to load from that directory which is what I generally did in 2006. gmencoder would not not work for me in 2006 and it doesn't appear to be in the repositories anymore. Any advise on how to get it working or suggestions for an alternative easy to use application would be appreciated.
  14. I have got it working now. I formatted the drive again using mcc, the same as I did previously, but this time I didnt click the mount button after the formatting stage. I am none the wiser, but at least I have a working drive again.
  15. I am trying to copy 185GB of data between 2 external usb HDD's, but I keep getting errors. As root using konqueror, I am trying to copy from sdb1, a borrowed ntfs hard disk volume to sda1 a newly formatted ext3 removable device. It will happily copy for a couple of minutes, and then squark about about not being able to copy files with a "skip" button, but it just wont copy any more files. Then I cant delete the files that did copy over to the ext3 drive, comes up with an error until I unmount then remount the device again, then I can delete the files. In an effort to get more information, I tried to copy the files using a terminal, same result, It will copy for a couple of minutes and then give me a whole lot of errors cp: cannot create directory `/mnt/removable1/LinuxPartitionBackUP/Beck - The Information': Read-only file system cp: cannot create directory `/mnt/removable1/LinuxPartitionBackUP/Music': Read-only file system etc...etc.. Please if anyone can help because I just dont understand why if it is a read only file system it copys some files then stops. I have tried changing permissions of /mnt/removeable1 but it makes no difference Edit: I have just noticed that the files appear to copy ok to another internal drive partition but I just dont have the space to copy everything off, so I feel the problem imust be with my newly formatted drive.
