ianw1974
Do this, and post the results for me: netstat -tan I'm interested to see if cups is running. Also do: service cups status and let me know what it says.
gwyn
Okay - I have just noticed something that I don't think should be there, but I have can't for the life of me think how it got there - and I am unsure how to change it. Under the Printers control panel, (where I get the error message) at the bottom under where it says Printer system currently used >cups, it lists the server. My server is listed as my printer IP address. Is this correct? It looks like this > Server: 192.168.43.201:631 G This is the result of netstat -tan [root@localhost gwyn]# netstat -tan Active Internet connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address Stat e tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:776 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:111 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6000 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:5335 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:7741 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 192.168.43.19:46824 212.69.225.140:3128 ESTA BLISHED tcp 0 1 192.168.43.19:43543 195.85.245.20:80 SYN_ SENT tcp 0 0 :::6000 :::* LIST EN As far as the second entry, it says "cupsd is stopped" I have also added a post about a server listing just this minute. Thanks again
ianw1974
OK, cups doesn't seem to be listening, but port 631 is correct so don't worry about this. Can you provide me the output from: chkconfig --list I want to see the services, and see what we got.

ianw1974
OK, it's definitely not working, since cups has off against everything. Can you open a console prompt and type: su (enter root password when prompted) make sure prompt now says root at beginning, or type whoami to verify you are root. Then type: chkconfig cups on and then do a: chkconfig --list to verify cups now says on against at least runlevels 3 and 5. There will be others than say on, but 3 and 5 are the normal ones as your system runs level 3 without gui and 5 with gui. Without this enabled, we're gonna have real problems with printing, it has to be running, and these commands should work and sort it out. If not, you've got a big problem with your install. gwyn
okay - I hope I have done everything ok - I copy and pasted my terminal Password: [root@localhost gwyn]# whoami root [root@localhost gwyn]# chkconfig cups on [root@localhost gwyn]# chkconfig --list alsa 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off apcupsd 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off atd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off crond 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off cups 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off dm 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:on 6:off freshclam 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off haldaemon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off harddrake 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off keytable 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off kheader 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:off 5:on 6:off lisa 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off mDNSResponder 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off messagebus 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off netfs 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off netplugd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off network 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off nfslock 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off nifd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off numlock 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off oki4daemon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off partmon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off portmap 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off rawdevices 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off sound 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off syslog 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off xfs 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off xinetd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off xinetd based services: cups-lpd: off rsync: off [root@localhost gwyn]# I then go Configure>Configure my Desktop>Peripherals>Printers and a pop up window opens and reports Unable to retrieve the printer list. ianw1974
No, service is enabled now, so that's good. If you've not rebooted, reboot, or instead to save the reboot: service cups start and now you should be good to go.
gwyn
Thanks again - but no-go! The same error message. Just so that I understand. The fact that in the printer control panel, it lists the server as the printer ip address - this is ok? The server is not where cups is trying to locate the drivers etc? Just thought I'd check, because it does not work when I try and connect a USB printer - same error. Sorry - I am sure you are fed up now - I just find it a bit frustrating!!! ianw1974
Make sure the service is on using the chkconfig --list again. If it is, then reboot. And then make sure the service is running. Click System/Configuration/Configure Your Computer. then go into System and choose the option to view services. Is cups on in the list of services for 3 and 5? Is it running? If not, suggest you reinstall, because we've gone through this way too many times now, and if the commands have turned the service on, and its still not working you've got BIG problems. gwyn
Shame I didn't try a re-install earlier - picked up the USB Printer first time. Now if I could just find the drivers for my Laser.........! Thanks very much for all your patience G.
ianw1974
Glad you got it sorted :P Try www.linuxprinting.org to get the driver if there's nothing directly available in Mandriva.
