  1. Hi, I am trying to install Mandriva on my Mac Book Pro using Parallels. Everything seems to be going fine, but when I reach the final stages and have to configure my graphics card, there seems to be a problem. The default is vesa, but when tested this causes the instalation to crash. If I don't test, it crashes on launch. I have tried the ATI Radeon (the card in the MBP is a RadeonX1600) as well, and with similar results. I know some of you have had success with Parallels, so which graphics device did you choose? Thanks very much. G.
  2. Shame I didn't try a re-install earlier - picked up the USB Printer first time. Now if I could just find the drivers for my Laser.........! Thanks very much for all your patience G.
  3. Thanks again - but no-go! The same error message. Just so that I understand. The fact that in the printer control panel, it lists the server as the printer ip address - this is ok? The server is not where cups is trying to locate the drivers etc? Just thought I'd check, because it does not work when I try and connect a USB printer - same error. Sorry - I am sure you are fed up now - I just find it a bit frustrating!!!
  4. okay - I hope I have done everything ok - I copy and pasted my terminal Password: [root@localhost gwyn]# whoami root [root@localhost gwyn]# chkconfig cups on [root@localhost gwyn]# chkconfig --list alsa 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off apcupsd 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off atd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off crond 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off cups 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off dm 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:on 6:off freshclam 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off haldaemon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off harddrake 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off keytable 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off kheader 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:off 5:on 6:off lisa 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off mDNSResponder 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off messagebus 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off netfs 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off netplugd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off network 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off nfslock 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off nifd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off numlock 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off oki4daemon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off partmon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off portmap 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off rawdevices 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off sound 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off syslog 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off xfs 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off xinetd 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off xinetd based services: cups-lpd: off rsync: off [root@localhost gwyn]# I then go Configure>Configure my Desktop>Peripherals>Printers and a pop up window opens and reports Unable to retrieve the printer list. Should I reinstall Mandriva - everything else seems Brilliant!!!!! G

  6. Okay - I have just noticed something that I don't think should be there, but I have can't for the life of me think how it got there - and I am unsure how to change it. Under the Printers control panel, (where I get the error message) at the bottom under where it says Printer system currently used >cups, it lists the server. My server is listed as my printer IP address. Is this correct? It looks like this > Server: 192.168.43.201:631 G This is the result of netstat -tan [root@localhost gwyn]# netstat -tan Active Internet connections (servers and established) Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address Stat e tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:776 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:111 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:6000 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 127.0.0.1:5335 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:7741 0.0.0.0:* LIST EN tcp 0 0 192.168.43.19:46824 212.69.225.140:3128 ESTA BLISHED tcp 0 1 192.168.43.19:43543 195.85.245.20:80 SYN_ SENT tcp 0 0 :::6000 :::* LIST EN As far as the second entry, it says "cupsd is stopped" I have also added a post about a server listing just this minute. Thanks again
  7. Thanks everyone for trying to help me understand my problem. I have tried everything. I have been a root user, and entered chkconfig cups on I have then checked them immediately afterwards and 2-5 are on. I have started the cups service with service cups start and then I go to configure my desktop, Peripherals, Printers. When here the error message - Unable to retrieve the printer list. Error message received from manager: Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: the IPP request failed for an unknown reason. I have rebooted, and still the error message I went to the GUI, checked my service, Cups is running on boot. Sorry, but I am unsure what part (and there must be a part) I am getting wrong. G.
  8. Hi, It is not connected to any other machine, but rather directly to the school network.
  9. Hi, Ok! When I enter chkconfig --list cups 1 through 6 are off I then enter chkconfig cups on I rebooted the computer. I got the error message as before. I went back to the console and tried chkconfig --list cups 1 through 6 are still off. Did I do everything ok? Thanks
  10. A subtle but important difference!! Thanks - now I do get the administrator button etc. But I also get an error message "Unable to retrieve the printer list. Error message received from manager: Connection to CUPS server failed. Check that the CUPS server is correctly installed and running. Error: the IPP request failed for an unknown reason." I have read (carefully this time) all your instructions. As it is a school, we do use a proxy server, but I think this has been entered correctly as I have (as far as I can see) full internet access in other areas. Sorry to be a pain G. Hi, It has its own network card connected directly to the school network, It does not go through any other computer,
  11. Thanks, I ran from the root console and it went okay. The options to Add Printer are still greyed out though. Should I do anything else? I just can't seem to find the Administrator Mode. Thanks again for your answer! G.
  12. Hi Thanks for your reply. I cannot seem to find any Administrator mode button on the Printer Control Panel. There is an expert mode under Options at the top file menu, but this does not make any difference. I tried both other suggestions - rpm -qa | grep cups worked ok, but when I entered urpmi cups it returned an error "command not found". I would be grateful if you could suggest anything else or maybe think where I get to Administartor mode. Thanks again
  13. Hi, I am trying to add a printer on mandriva - latest release. At our school, where I am trying to run this computer (I am in charge of seeing whether we can have a suite of Mandriva computers!!!!!!) we have a networked Epson Aculaser 1000 printer. From Control Center i went to add printers. It gave me notice that I had no printer installed, I entered the IP address of our network printer. It then took me to the printers control panel - but it has nothing listed, and the 'Add Printer' is greyed out. In fact everything is greyed out except Refresh and Configure Cups. I have since tried attaching a USB printer, but I can't seem to be able to add this printer either. Any help appreciated - thanks. G. [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  14. Thanks a lot guys - it worked - crystal clear display!!! Of course I now have another problem with printing!!! (see new post) Thanks a lot - I am liking Mandriva a lot so far. G.
  15. Hi, Thanks for your reply. No I did not think to try the Mandriva One DVD - I jumped right in!!! I think I could make it out, if I knew where to get the system update! Having no idea where it is yet - it makes it difficult to navigate! Terminal is pretty unusable, but I can just about make characters out if I know what I am trying to read. If you could tell me where to look - it would be a great help. If I download the Mandriva One DVD, would this be much easier? Again - thanks for the welcome and support
