Western Digital is a dog. Their quality has bottomed out. Get the Seagate. I also prefer Maxtor, but would rate the Seagate highest.

Two seagate drives in this computer here, an ide and sata2, No problems, very quiet drives.

However, a friend of mine who bought a seagate external drive, had it fail on him. He still hasnt sent it in, so I have no idea why it failed, but he claims it happened after installing quicktime/itunes. That doesnt make any sense to me at all, but he said there's others who have had the same thing happen.

Either way, the drive wasnt 6 months old and had been treated properly, so it had no reason to fail.

I had a Llacie external drive, that worked well, used a western digital though, and it kinda stopped working when it got knocked off my desk.

I have found in the past if a drive is going to fail if will fail in the first 6 Months or not for a couple of years. All Brands..

In the case with my preference. Maxtor..

I have mine just in a 3.5 HDD enclosure USB2 ..

Really happy with the performance..

If you buy an enclosure one with lots of cooling fins, or a fan can help..

Once in a while like doing alot of reads and writes mine gets very hot, and switches off.

(Twice it happened in six months i use it every day)

Oh, i might add my brother has a maxtor, it's really problematic, often needs to be replugged multiple times to be detected. it's very cheap in it's design too, it hasnt got a power switch - you just have to yank the power to turn it off.

My preference to an external is a Maxtor of my choice in a case of my choice. I generally spend less than a market external, and of course I resell it for market price, making me competative with local retail!

I had a Western Digital that went out after 4 months. It contained critical data, was not backed up, and I ended up spending $1200 for recovery. Western Digital could not supply parts for this brand new drive. They replaced it, but who cares about the drive? The data is where it is at. Had parts been available, I could have gotten the data for around $500. Western Digital could not even tell the recovery vendor with confidence where the drive was built! Hence, no parts.
