Guest johnKFT
Can anyone tell me why my hard drive (Dell Inspiron 7500) whines constantly, loudly and irritatingly? It seems to work without problems. Is it about to pack up or can it be cured? Help? anyone.
ramfree17
i dont own a dell but excessive harddrive activity means that it is being accessed. does it happen no matter what OS is currently running? it might be that the memory is not enough and your OS is caching some data into its swap. but then it could be a number of mechanical reasons,i.e. loose seating of the harddrive, harddrive is really noisy, harddrive is going to give, etc. ciao! Counterspy
The important question is whether the drive sounded like this from the beginning or whether it has just started doing this recently. Have you made any changes to anything including software and its configurations, hardware installations and its configurations on any OS on your machine? Some drives fo make more noise than others. I now run Maxell drives but previously had a Quantum and the noise from the beginning was irritating compared to the almost whisper quiet of the Maxells.
