Guest Exalted_Leader
I've been attempting to install a program or two from the web, to get used to tarballs and the like, and I think I'm getting the hang of it... but this little error really stumps me. Every application I've run ./configure on seems to run through the process really smoothly, until the very end - when 'configure: error: Could not find zlib library' pops-up. Is there a file package or patch of some sort that I need to find? (most recent app I was attempted to install was FreeCiv. Before that, some drivers for my Wacom Tablet). scarecrow
Which distribution? If it is Mandriva, look at your package manager for some zlib1 and zlib1-devel packages, which you should install before running ./configure
Trio3b
You say you are installing from the web - are you using apps that are packaged for your specific distro and kernel? I destroyed a pefectly good MDK 10 installation by trying to install an app that came with different versions of dependencies than thos erequired by my distro. tyme
Installing from source isn't always necessary. Make sure you go into Mandriva Control Center, into the Programs section and then to Install Programs and search to make sure the program you want is not already in the repositories you have configured. Also, using the easy-urpmi link at the top of the page you can get more repos to get programs from. FreeCiv, for one, should be in some of the repos.
