Guest cabal20000
I can't seem to get a file association for .RAR files. What will do it that is easy to install. Again I am a total greenhorn at this.
devries
Install unrar (urpmi unrar) and extract with: unrar e <name of file>
ianw1974
You need to install a package called unrar: urpmi unrar from the command prompt will get it installed for you. You need to su and supply root password first. edit: devries beat me to it :P
solarian
After you have installed unrar, you can use ARK to unarchive rar files.
scarecrow
You can even unpack the official rar demo at a global directory, say /usr/bin. Although unlicensed, it does not expire, and allows you packing files as .rar You can use ark, or xarchive- both do a good job. Ark is a KDE module, while xarchive is platform independent and depends only on GTK2.

I find this extra step annoying.

AussieJohn
Hello devries. I think the correct unpack is unrar x <filename>.rar It is what I have used totally successfully numerous times in the last week. Note the space either side of the x Here is a helpful webpage that somebody here located but I can't remember who to give credit to. http://www.cyberciti.biz/faqs/2006/02/open...t-rar-files.php Cheers. scarecrow
"rar e" does the same thing with "unrar e", and "rar x" or "unrar x" does the same thing, but keeping the directory structure. unrar is rather unneeded, its sole reason of existing is that it's freeware, while rar is supposed to be shareware.
