Extracting .RAR files

You need to install a package called unrar:

 

urpmi unrar

 

from the command prompt will get it installed for you. You need to su and supply root password first.

You can even unpack the official rar demo at a global directory, say /usr/bin.

Although unlicensed, it does not expire, and allows you packing files as .rar

You can use ark, or xarchive- both do a good job. Ark is a KDE module, while xarchive is platform independent and depends only on GTK2.

 

Is there a way to get ARK to recognize RAR files without having to have to choose them from a drop down menu? I find this extra step annoying.

Hello devries. I think the correct unpack is unrar x <filename>.rar It is what I have used totally successfully numerous times in the last week. Note the space either side of the x
