Guest lockettpots
Hi All I'm a complete newbie to linux so please be gentle! I've installed Mandrive 2006 (free) and managed to get most things I need working however I just cannot get Audacity to do anything, recording or playback. I've read through other posts and tried some of the things there but without any luck. When I start Audacity I get the following error message:- There was an error initializing the i/o layer You will not be able to play or record sound. and sure enough I can't!. OK I have a AC97 card. Have an ALSA driver. (can't change to OSS driver, guess its not included on the free distro) I've installed the alsa-oss library using a rpm (not quite sure if I need to do anything else to use the library), checked the inputs through Kmix, but still nothing. Incidentally the Gnome Sound Recorder isn't recording either, but I can play CD's and get system sounds. If anyone can tell me how to get things going in a step by step, really stupid user way, I would be eternally grateful. regards John Edited December 22, 2005 by lockettpots
scarecrow
OSS support is included in the free version! (just set your urpmi sources and checkout for uninstalled ALSA packages). However, I don't think Audacity will need it, unless what you use was explicitly compiled for OSS.
michaelcole
I have the same problem some times KDE likes to have the Sound to it self. What you can try is this go to configure sound under the KDE options System Configuration KDE Sound system Auto Suspend Change this value mine is set to 60 Sec.. Press Apply Wait 1 Min then try opening Audacity. This fixed it for me..
Guest lockettpots
Thanks for the replies. scarecrow;- I've checked for uninstalled alsa packages as you suggest and I seem to have them all installed. michaelcole:- Did what you suggested and Audacity no longer gives me the error message and when I press record the cursor moves from left to right, however:- The recording line does not show any waveform, the record level indicator doesn't move and the playback gives no sound (as indeed it wouldn't if nothing has been recorded from the mike. Any additional suggestions please? BTW. I can load and play a wav file. John Edited December 23, 2005 by lockettpots
