AussieJohn
Hello fresh. Welcome to MUB. Since it is close to Christmas and also a weekend you might be slow in getting responses but I cn suggest a feww things you can try first offf to see if it helps. Try going into the bios and disabling Plug & Play. If and when you get to login then...... Also open MCC .........Services ......and deactivate apic, acpi (if they are listed) and also Harddrake. You can also go into MCC ..............Boot..... and untick .....Enable ACPI...... and tick..........Force No Local APIC. I hope this is at least some help. Cheers. John. Guest fresh
ok tried bios pnp off still the same stops after activating swap ..
ianw1974
When lilo appears, press ESC, then type: linux noapic and see if it helps any? If not, you can then add other commands to the line by pressing ESC again, and typing something like: linux noapic nolapic other parameters to add if this doesn't work are: acpi=off ide=nodma but add only one at any one time, so we can find out which one helps with the booting problem. arctic
I would try to boot the CD and and go into rescue mode now (press f1 and type rescue). Then I would check if the filesystems and partitions are really set up properly. Maybe you need to activate the swap partition again in case it does not get mounted (mkswapon /dev/hdXX)... ianw1974
Does any keyboard interaction help it continue the process? Like pressing spacebar, or ESC or something.?
Guest fresh
nope dosn't seem to .. it's just frosen .. i just think it's strange cos it's the same on 2 computers with different set ups . and also my 10.1 is actin same and those are original disks i have used before. but i simply can't figure out what it is i'm not doing right. where that little tweak is .. that one damn X you need to enable or disable.. ianw1974
I don't think it's X causing you a problem, because it hasn't even gotten to that stage yet. X is a good 30 seconds later if not more than where your currently frozen at. For info though, the option is in /etc/inittab, and the line you want is for the runlevel. It's normally set to "5" for the GUI to load, and "3" just to end up at the command line.

Guest fresh
what i need to knwo is what it's trying to do after swap activation .. cos is gives the line activating swap [ok] _ and stops. so i 'm guessing that it's stoping on something just after it activates the swap part. it sees . nodma. and apic and all that seems to be turned of every where. there is no raid do that can't be it... trying to install again with bare minimum and sec level low ... ianw1974
When reinstalling, pay attention to the summary screen at the end to make sure that all is configured. It may help at least to see where the problems might be occuring and what hardware item it's relating to.
