sjaglin
Hi there, I spent a few hours now trying to install the awsome Googlearth on Linux Mandriva 2006, here is my progress: 1- Clean install of wine and xwine (version : Wine 20050725 which is I suppose the latest as it comes straight from the ftp sites. 2- As explained in wine hq : http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=3254 2-a Install of DCOM98 (whatever that is) 2-b copy a version of secur32.dll in ~./wine/windows/system/ 2-c run winecfg and load GoogleEarth.exe Then the installer seems to run ok, but keeps stuck at about 5% of the intall progress barr and does not move any further. It stays on : installing c:\_\...........\Layout.bin I found that link as well : http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_GoogleEarth_with_wine And this is as far as it went! Well, It seems it should work as Mandriva gets a bronze score on the winehq site, has anyone managed it? If yes, could we have a detailed howto for beginers? Cheers! ianw1974
I'll give it a go and see if I can get it to work with wine now.

ianw1974
I've managed to get it installed, but not running as an application yet. This is under Gentoo. Will have a go under Mandriva 2006 see if it's any better.
ianw1974
Mandriva 2006 is even worse. When you run it, it just restarts X. I have managed to install on both, but not to the point the application can be ran. I'll have another go when I've got a bit more time to test it, today I've ran out of time. If anyone wants to install though :P here's the process. This is based on a "clean" install of wine, and therefore, if you have an existing wine installation, it'll be renamed. So bear this in mind. First, download, extract Side-Net Wine Configuration Utility: http://sidenet.ddo.jp/winetips/config.html then, download dcom98.exe for Windows 98 from Microsoft. You can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en Then of course, download Google Earth: http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html Now, the installation process. Since you should have already completed the sidenet configuration, you can now start with dcom98: winecfg (make sure Windows version is set to "Windows 98" WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32=n" wine dcom98.exe once installation of DCOM has finished, we can now start with the installation of Google Earth: winecfg (make sure Windows version is now set to "Windows XP" cp /mnt/windows/system32/psapi.dll ~/c/windows/system wine googleearth.exe if you don't have Windows already, download psapi.dll from here: http://www.dll-files.com/search.php?s=psapi now install. The installation could take a little time to complete so be patient. So, next is to attempt to run it: winecfg (change back to "Windows 98") wine "c:\program files\google\google earth\googleearth.exe" if you get any failure problems, you can try with: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32,usp10,msvcrt=n" wine "c:\program files\google\google earth\googleearth.exe" or another set of parameters: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32,usp10,rpcrt4,msvcrt=n" and hope you get better luck than I did! SoulSe
AFAIK - Google Earth can be set to render in either the DirectX or OpenGL API - so obviously for Linux we would switch it to OpenGL, -but- should you choose to use Cedega (www.transgaming.com), you'd probably have better results in installation and in utilising either API. Wine is cool, but when it comes to beefy rendering, such as what is going on here, Cedega usually wins ;)
sjaglin
Thanx Ian , I will have a look at that 2morrow am! I might also give it a try on suse 10 to see... Chhers!
ianw1974
Yeah, I noticed that when I ran it on Gentoo, it was complaining with a login box problem and that the colour depth needing altering, or I should try directx. Anyone out there thinking of trying with wine, find directx for wine, or try cedega as it'd prob make it easier!
ianw1974
Found this on the winehq link here: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versio...&iTestingId=244 Instead of that is written in this document, we can't tell Google Earth works on Wine since:=> only a few people managed to make it working => this need proprietary elements like DCOM => this is very difficult to install => even if it works, it works bad.. seems it'll be a no-go for now, but I'll keep plugging and see if I can get it working :P
sjaglin
I don t know what you'll make of it but I found this link : http://exeter.homedns.org/ Where it seems there is a script to install Googleearth under Linux Stef :deal:
ianw1974
He built the script based on the gentoo wiki page, which is what I used mostly to perfect the install guide posted above to run under Gentoo/Mandriva 2006. Could try the script, but it'll probably give the same end result.
