Network Access Problems

New to Linux

I have installed Mandriva Linux LE2005 with KDE as network server for LAN based on Windows98se .

Followed instructions by “Illogic-al” - <NT-06: How to set Samba Networking>

Have set up two “shared” directories :-

Home/fileserver/PiServer

& mnt/PIDATA

in order to access these directories I need to change permissions (in ROOT) for fileserver and mnt from Forbidden to Can View and Modify Content. Then I have full access to PiServer but PIDATA is not visible. OK for PiServer – but after a short period of time, with or without activity, the permissions reset themselves and access is lost.

What am I doing wrong?

[moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman - welcome aboard :)]

this could be related to msec which enforces some rules on file and directory permissions depending on your chosen security level.

you could add a user defined entry for your directory with the permissions you need

open the Mandriva control center (terminal-like icon with red wrench), under security (there is an icon of a folder with a lock in front) then add a custom rule, ok, after that run msec as root in the terminal now your settings should last

sorry, sitting in front of a german-speaking comp at the moment, so I don't have the exact labeling of the icons
