linux-compatible modems [solved]

I've still not solved my dial-up problem in LE2005 (see "kppp jammed, modem permanently engaged"), but the thought HAS occurred to me that a reasonable solution might be to buy a device that definitely does work with that OS. So... how about some feedback (preferably just from LE2005 users, mind you) on which modems YOU are using. Should be interesting to see the variety of linux-compatible devices around.

This link may help:

they have a scanModem tool to identify the chipset, to then attempting to get a module/driver for it.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro A10, and never bothered figuring out getting the modem working, since I had dual boot to Windows at the time. I don't have this now, but always use broadband anyway, so never needed the modem.

If you can, stay away from winmodems (HSP or whatever) - the clue is if the box says it needs a PI 150MHz or so, don't buy. If it needs a 486, it's ok.

The low requirement means it doesn't offload signal processing to your cpu (HSP = host signal processing), more cycles for eyecandy or whatever.. :)
